TN Fall Contest: Get Thee Behind Me, Colbert

Submitted by on October 22, 2007 – 9:30 PM17 Comments

With nine days to go, we’re at around 87K — just three grand more, and the mysteriously generous and generously mysterious $ throws in another $2,500, which would put us at $92,500. Which would put us in sight of 100K.

Which would be all-caps AWESOME.

Also! Stephen Colbert puts on a fine television program, and was forking hilarious on Strangers With Candy. However. If he thinks Colbert Nation is going to beat Tomato Nation, I have news for him, and that news is as follows: truthiness is no match for awesomeyness. Not even with an on-air announcement, the advantage of which I do not enjoy.

I SAID GOOD DAY, SIR.

I’m about to update the prize list with the latest generous donations from readers, including a signed Everwood script (thank you, Berlanti!) and some Pixarabilia, so if you haven’t donated yet, it’s not too late to get in on the sweet prizing action. If you have donated already, 1) you’re awesome, obvi, and 2) the contest still has lots to choose from — Play-Doh, field trips, music and science, in cities all over the country.

You realize, of course, that if the TomaDonations hit $100K and beat Mr. Colbert, the video of the tomato dance must to go on the Report. Comedy Central, indeed.

  • Peach says:

I saw that epi of the Report. And all I thought was, good luck, Mr. Favorite Son of South Carolina. You are no match for the Tomato Dance.

  • Sarah says:

Okay, so this is embarassing because I absolutely LOVED My So-Called Life. Loved it! Was obsessed. Was in my sophomore year of high school, just like Angela, when it was on. Obsessed!

But I have no idea what this dance is you are referring to. Can someone explain which episode it’s from? I did a cursory YouTube search and only came up with the one where she’s dancing around her room to “Blister in the Sun” because she’s so excited to be “over” (yeah right) Jordan Catalano.

But I don’t think that’s the dance Sars is going to do in the Tomato Outfit. Hmmm.

  • FloridaErin says:

I second that, and can totally see the folks at the Report being all over that. Sign me up!

  • Kona says:

I couldn’t donate much, but dammit, I donated again. And it was…awesome. Take that, Colbert!

  • dr. e says:

Aww–Jon Stewart for President is way down on the list.

  • Jane says:

Season 1, episode 7 at about 6 minutes into the clip is the Angela Dance…

  • Cathy says:

Take that, Colbert–I’m bankrolling some Virgil! Put the Tomato Nation on notice!

Hee. This campaign needed a little extra push in the last week, so I think this last threat from Colbert should be just the thing.

  • DensityDuck says:

    In your FACE, Kohl-Bear!

  • DensityDuck says:

    Actually, something interesting:

    (10/23/07 08:11 PDT)
    Tomato Nation: $88,113 / 1043 donors / 13,621 students
    Attention Whore for President: $27,781 / 427 donors / 8,919 students

Dollars per donor: TN $85, CfP $65
Dollars per student: TN $6.50, CfP $3.11

Not only is TN winning on the absolute, it’s winning on the specifics; the average TN donor gives more money and targets it better (giving one kid $5 is better than giving five kids $1 each.)

  • foo says:

I dunno, DensityDuck, if I was that fifth kid, I’d rather have a buck than watch someone else get 5. :) :) :)

Oh yeah, Sars, I’m donating again. For the 5th time. Cannot let the Colbert beat our the Tomato Dance!

  • Margaret in CO says:

Just donated to the storytellers – in my sister’s name. She teaches a similar class, in an inner city, and I think she’ll really dig it.

    GO TEAM TN!!!!

  • Hawkeyegirl says:

Adding my name to the list of re-donators…

    Suck it Colbert!

    Sars for President!

  • Julie says:

Colbert is awesome in many ways, but we shall not let him out-awesome the Tomato Nation. I can’t wait to see this dance!

  • Katie says:

I donated again, too. We must win!!

  • Clairezilla says:

If we hit that $100k mark, can we fund some extra projects about bears?

  • Nomie says:

I’m curious as to what was actually said on the Colbert Report, since I can’t watch any video that might exist on the interwebs.

And, you know, even if the Colbert fans miraculously surpass our awesome total in the next week… well, it means more kids getting stuff they need, so I won’t be that broken up about it.
