The Takeaway

I appeared on the show this morning to talk baseball; the archived version is here.   I fear that having to get up at 5 AM may have gotten the best of me in the coherence department, but Phillies fans will feel the love.

Nah, you sounded pretty darned coherent … and I’m desperately hoping that you’re right about home-field advantage holding for the Phillies!

Now if Joe Torre were coaching any team other than the Dodgers, I’d want that team to get into the World Series — just to rub the Steinbrenners’ noses in it. But the Phillies need to get through the Dodgers to reach the World Series … so the Dodgers must perforce fall.

I was with a guy last night who: a) is a Detroit native and b) wasn’t even BORN in 1977. So when we were up 7-5 at the end of the 8th inning he was all:

“Oh, calm down. All the Phillies have to do is hold the Dodgers off in the 9th; it’s not that hard.

I, of course, kept my head buried in my hands and watched the whole inning peeking through my fingers. Then I explained the whole truckload of psychological baggage Phillies fans carry around vis-a-vis the Dodgers, Black Friday, etc.

To my credit, the term “vis-a-vis” was not involved in the explanation.

Home-field, shmome-field…we don’t need no stinkin’ advantage! Go Fightin’ Phils! And please try not to break our hearts again.

As an SF Giants fan, I’m contractually obligated to hate the Dodgers. As an SF Giants fan living in SoCal, I hate the Dodgers because while plenty of good people I know and like are fans, so too are people who’ve thrown peanuts at my head and quite literally told me I should die. Thus ALL my post-season prayers are going toward the Phillies. I like Torre, and I can respect what he’s done given how crappy LA was playing early in the season, but if they make it to the Series I will put a pencil in my eye and tie a little flag to it that clearly proclaims my allegiance to whichever AL team wins out. And I’m no fan of Boston, so arrrgh.

  • SteveL. says:

Figures a useless, ex-Cub hit the winning Philly homer last night.

  • L.H. says:

Then he’s not so useless, is he? :)

  • SteveL. says:

Let me quantify: He has been 99% useless. 1% useful since 10-13.
