Your run down made me chuckle...........especially the part about the gang taking 5 hours to walk into the school, pushing nerds outa the way just to make sure we know the're dicks.....bahaahha. .How dated is this show!? Oh and I dont mean the clothes and music...... the 'comedy' bits are ridiculously lame and the so called 'cool' scenes try way too hard........love every minute of it though! BTW 100% agree with MaryAnne, the captain DID mean 'are Hanson and Penhall dating......' note the wry look in his eyes and Hanson's grin and 'yeah right' eyes......

Not a big Tom Hanson fan huh?

"I took this as Fuller asking if Hanson was dating Penhall, and that was why he was so eager to remain partnered with him!"

That wouldn't make any sense. Fuller is asking if Hanson is dating Hoffs, which is why he doesn't want to be partnered with her to work on a dangerous case. I thought the whole point of the warm embrace shown between Hanson and Hoffs in the beginning (and end) of the episode (which you noted) was meant to imply they had something going between them.

I totally disagree cnj, Frederic was an awesome addition to the show and i personally liked the way he brought to life the character of Jenko. He makes hippie fun and cool. 21 Jump street completely killed it when they wrote him off. Either way he's continued to prove me right with his after projects.

According to the episode commentary (by DeLuise, who rightly rags on himself for his constant over-acting a la grief face in the opening shot), Frederic Forrest's departure was due to how he and the writer/producers couldn't come to agreement about how his character should be played. He mentions how Forrest was more used to "big screen" work and that he was always ad-libing his lines rather than follow the script. (I have no idea if that meant Forrest was for or against the embarrassing hippie shtick, but I'd say that accounts for the obvious dial-back from how he was in the pilot.) Deluise states Forrest "parted amicably" but as he also claims the two options for writing out the death involved either drunk driving or Jenko being shot in the throat (so he couldn't talk anymore), it sounds like things were not so amicable, yeah? Or maybe they all just had a really smug sense of humor.

That's not to say audience response wasn't also a factor in the decision (who knows? I find Jenko cringe-worthy even now and I don't remember anything "hippie" being particularly cool at the time), but I just thought I'd point out what the episode commentary states. It was a really abrupt change, but ultimately for the best, I think. Capt. Fuller was way more suited to the attitude of the show.

Right around the time Sars posted this recap, the IMDb had Frederic Forrest's birthday (#73!) featured. Betcha a 73-year-old Jenko would be yelling "Cut the rebop!" a LOT more than the younger incarnation.

<i>"Then Brooks dons a beret so we'll know he means business."</i>

Hee. Extracurricular clubs, RJ? I'd say the writers guess that gangs are organized like a Ladies' Auxilliary, or the DAR.

Also, "stroppy." Now there's a word that ought to be wider use.

@ Jaybird: "Icki" is giving me the giggles.

"Furthermore: the "president"? Do the writers think gangs function like extracurricular clubs?"

Oh, like you weren't the secretary/treasurer for YOUR local Bloods chapter. Like I was the only one!

I saw this one too, but had forgotten the lieutenant had been killed by a drunk driver.

I can't wait for Sars to recap the episodes when Richard Greico's character (Booker?) comes in to attempt to out-emo Depp. Too bad Greico grew up to be such a tool- I remember thinking he was cute back then.
