N Candy AA: The Choco-lite Eight

Polls close Thursday 22 April at 3 PM ET. Updated bracket is here.Confused? Click here.

1 Butterfinger vs. 2 fudge. I know we granted fudge a #2 seed, but I am actually, really, very, totally surprised that fudge continuesto push on through. It’s a slippery contender, to be sure. I love fudge, but I think it’s a bit irregular for it to keep appearing in everyflight. I’m going to be very bold and say that fudge will trot on outand Butterfinger will pile up the votes.

1 Butterfinger vs. 2 fudge

  • fudge (53%, 622 Votes)
  • Butterfinger (47%, 550 Votes)

2 Snickers vs. 1 Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. Paging Judgement of Solomon. King Solomon, please report to the candy store with your sword. In a tournament where both Bunting and I have admitted to one another that each round brings us even less to say about the contenders, this match-up is both colossal and expected. In person, my mother-in-law told me she can’t believe we didn’t give Snickers a number-one seed. Over the phone, she made the point that Snickers has universal appeal. I can’t disagree. For non-nut haters, it does have everything. It’s a riot of nuts, caramel, chocolate, and whatever the hell nougat is. By comparison, Reese’s PBC is the soul of simplicity. Peanut butter. Chocolate. Lovely little ridges. It had an adorable ad campaign, which begged the question: Who the hell are all these people snacking on jars of peanut butter?

I love them both. Separately and together. However, I will listen to my mother-in-law and call this for Snickers. When all Israel heard the verdict the Keckler had given, they held the Keckler in awe, because they saw that she had wisdom from Willie Wonka to administer nougat. — Keckler

1 Reese's Peanut Butter Cup vs. 2 Snickers

  • Reese's Peanut Butter Cup (64%, 761 Votes)
  • Snickers (36%, 420 Votes)

Total Voters: 1,181

5 M&Ms vs. 6 Kit Kat. Clearly we underestimated Kit Kat’s power — not to mention the number of different ways to eat it which exist. Maybe I’d find it less dull if I didn’t tend just to stuff candy into my facehole instead of savoring it, but I can only be what I am. Heh. So who wins? I’ll vote M for the greenie good-luck charm and the candy coating, and I think the little guys squeak through, but a Kit Kat victory will no longer surprise me.

5 M&Ms vs. 6 Kit Kat

  • Kit Kat (50%, 598 Votes)
  • M&Ms (50%, 593 Votes)

Total Voters: 1,191

5 Twix vs. 3 Three Musketeers. 3M has had a relatively easy trip through the draw thus far; I think that ends today. Twix is more appealing to those of us who like a savory/cookie-esque element in our candy; it’s shareable; and it just beat a fairly similar bar in the previous round. My suspicion is that we ranked Twix too low to begin with, but regardless, it prevails here. — Bunting

5 Twix vs. 3 Three Musketeers

  • Twix (76%, 864 Votes)
  • Three Musketeers (24%, 273 Votes)

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

Sorry for the momentary poll weirdness; should work now.

  • Ashley says:

Holy sophie’s choice, people. Snickers vs pb cups? I can’t vote. I’m paralyzed.

  • Amalthea says:

I will never understand the appeal of Snickers–there’s too much stuff in it, it all blends together and tastes like nothing. Ditto Mars bar or any of those other caramel/nougat things.

  • sam says:

ooh. I just took M&Ms into the lead by 1 vote

  • Deanna says:

It’s not giving me an option to vote. It’s just showing me how everybody else has voted so far.

  • Mike says:

Wait, Peanut M&Ms got knocked out? How did that happen? I feel like I should have stuffed the ballot box. I let my candy coated friends down. At least plain M&Ms are still there, but they are tied with Kit Kat? Crap! I’m going to go out an buy some now to drown my sorrow.

I’m surprised fudge is losing to Butterfinger right now. This chocolate world is turned upside down.

(I might like candy a little too much.)

  • Grainger says:

RPBC and Twix are both hammering their competitors, which isn’t a surprise. I’ve always picked RPBC for the win, because it’s the perfect candy bar. The construction is uncomplicated but not boringly simple (which is, incidentally, why Three Musketeers is getting plastered by Twix); each standard-size PBC is just slightly more than one bite, so you feel like you’re eating something substantial (but it’s not so big that you get bored before you finish); and the “modular” presentation means that serving sizes can be tailored to individual appetite. I just wish that they used slightly better materials, so that frozen ones didn’t wind up tasting like a wax candle. (I tend to prefer my bars firm, so I usually send them on a quick trip through the chiller.)

Anyway. WHAT THE HELL, SARS, why are Snickers and RPBC in the same bracket? That should have been the very final epic battle! Now it’s going to be RPBC turfing whoever it meets next and winning the final just by showing up for the game.

  • Laura G says:

For non-nut haters, it does have everything. It’s a riot of nuts, caramel, chocolate, and whatever the hell nougat is.

It does have one teeny-tiny problem. Sure, the nut-haters, coconut-haters, and raisin-haters have gotten their props, but I’m one of a small minority of caramel-haters, so I’ve been voting down many crowd-pleasers. It’s why I love me some 3 Musketeers, though!

  • Valerie says:

What? Peanut Butter Cup is crushing Snickers? What is wrong with you people?

  • Anlyn says:

I simply cannot choose between Reese’s and Snickers. Can’t. However, whichever one wins this round wins the whole thing.

  • ferretrick says:

    I cannot believe Reese’s/Snickers isn’t closer.

  • Keckler says:

Okay, I did not expect fudge to be going neck-and-neck with Butterfinger, or that PBC seems to be outstripping Snickers so early in the game!

  • attica says:

I won’t mind whoever wins M v Kitkat. I like them both, although for different reasons. 3Musk is pleasant, but, to me, ultimately uninteresting, so yeah, Twix ftw. And although I agree Snickers is a powerhouse, th PBC is too awesome, too inimitable to lose.

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

    @Deanna: Clear your cache.

@Grainger: Everything with nuts/kibble in it went into the same side of the draw. Our version of “regions.”

  • jive turkey says:

Nice work on the fudge piece. Hew, hew, and HEW.

  • Dawn says:

Butterfinger is vile and no amount of Bart Simpson hawking is going to change that. Go fudge! (which will promptly be outstripped, I think, if it goes up against either RPBC or Snickers next).

  • Hannah says:

I’d voted against fudge in every round up to this point–too many bad experiences with super-sweet, grainy cheapness. But then yesterday someone brought our office some basic chocolate fudge with walnuts and a cream cheese icing, and bam: a fudge-lover am I. (Hew.)

Props to Keckler on the PBC/Snickers write-up–I hadn’t even realized how much of a difference the lovely little ridges make, but I think that was what solidified my vote for the Cups.

  • Tisha_ says:

The choice between Reese’s and Snickers was hard, but it’ll be Reese’s everytime, for me.

  • Stephanie says:

I cleared my cache and it’s STILL not working for me. Grrrrr…ARGH! Off to the iPhone to see if I can slide things over to a KitKat win. (Although RPBC take the whole thing.)

  • Amie says:

If Reese’s PBC takes this round, I cannot fathom a world in which it does not win the whole thing.

My sympathy to the peanut and peanut-butter averse (allergic or otherwise). I have a food intolerance to mint, so the inaugural NC Double Scoop champion was huge disappointment.

  • Jen says:

Yeah, 3 Musketeers is boring, but I just tried the 3 Musketeers Truffle Crisp, and WHOA! Boring little wrapper, totally nondescript name, but I think I died a little bit when it was gone. Tastes like CHOCOLATE MILK (!!!!) and the crisp part has the texture of a Violet Crumble, but a bit crisper and lighter.

Also, just saw that Cadbury makes a candy bar called Finger of Fudge. Hew!

  • GracieGirl says:

Who the hell are all these people snacking on jars of peanut butter?

    That would be me. Heh.

RPBC v. Snickers is, indeed, a very tough choice. I’m one of those weird people who doesn’t like peanuts but loves (creamy) peanut butter and the Cups are one of my all-time faves. That said, however, Snickers is the only peanut-laden food that I will eat and enjoy. Plus, Snickers is far more filling and a better snack for those moments when you need both a chocolate fix and a bit of sustenance.

The big question, though, is which would I pick if I could only have one for the rest of my life? And when I think about it that way the answer is clear – Reese’s PBC.

I can only hope that M&M’s take out Twix in the next round because if I have to choose between a double-helping of chocolatey peanut butter and a double-helping of crispy, carmamely goodness, I may just go catatonic with indecision.

  • Beadgirl says:

I’ve been dreading for weeks Snicker’s victory, so seeing PBCs hold their own warms my cold, cold heart. PBCs’ victory will make up for the loss of Mounds.

Laura G, you are possibly the only person I know who hates caramel (oh wait! Mr. Beadgirl also hates it! Nevermind).

  • Tarn says:

But Reese’s peanut butter cups are so FLAT! They can’t compare to the nice full satisfying bite of Snickers (hew!). I want something more substantial in my mouth.(Hew again!)

Twix almost loses me in this same way…but there’s just enough with the caramel and crunchiness to be substantial. They aren’t just a flat little disk of thin chocolate and powdery peanut-buttery substance.

  • Grainger says:

@Sars: Meh. I guess that’s how the cookie crumbles, as it were.

Interesting voting so far: Two neck-and-neck and two runaways. Twix vs RPBC in the final, and I pick RPBC to take it.

Which I’ve been saying all along, but I can’t claim special insight; just the same thing as in N-Scoop-AA, which was that too many people are Single Issue Voters when it comes to food (to wit: “thing is yucky-ucky squicky-icky and I’ll never eat anything with thing“). It’s not about what people like the most, it’s about what people dislike the least, which is the bland-but-still-edible RPBC.

  • bluechaos says:

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups vs. Anything Edible = Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.
Sadly, I do not have any- oooh! but I do have the Breyer’s Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream!
…please excuse me while I ransack the freezer.

  • Maryanne says:

I happen to have both PB cups and Snickers in my very possession as we type and am ready and willing to conduct comparison tests on the spot.

Two minutes later-inconclusive, more testing needed.

Can I cast a write-in for one bite of Snickers followed by a bite of PB Cup? And so on?

  • Wehaf says:

I can’t eat chocolate; it gives me migraines. This is the worst elite eight ever. I’ll be sulking in the corner with my Starburst if anyone needs me.

  • Louisa says:

I want lightning to crash behind me as I cackle over the downfall of Snickers. It’s like a candy bar full of wood chips and it’s losing, hooray!

  • Louisa says:

@Grainger You’re exactly right, I was voting against Snickers. However, if I switch out Reese’s PB Cups for Trader Joe’s PB Cups (which I already did in my mind the moment cups were mentioned), then I’m definitely voting for the cups. I’d push my own grandmother out of the way for a box of those.

  • Keckler says:

@Wehaf: I don’t think it’s the worst Elite Eight for you, I’d say the entire bracket this go-around wasn’t for you. That’s unfortunate. However, we will be rolling out a non-chocolate thing just as soon as Bunting and I ingest quite a few cocktails.

  • Cyntada says:

“Paging Judgement of Solomon. King Solomon, please report to the candy store with your sword.”

Hee! Does that mean I get a slice of both?

I just started a temp job with the best perk ever… a freezer full of free ice cream treats! And, thanks to the raving here, I may just have to try the Snickers ice cream bar thingies I see in that freezer.

Hopefully they live up to the hype, because Snickers actual candy bars have never been my favorite. Wood chips, indeed! (Thank you, Louisa.) Another vote for Reese’s, with love, from me.

  • Rachel says:

@Grainger: “bland-but-still-edible?” Are you… what the… who? More for meeeeee!

Also, you guys, the Reese’s version of the Klondike bar? OMG. The first bite, you go “mmmeh, it’s a little… meh,” but the next few bites? Hooked, y’all. Totally hooked.

Reese’s FTW. I might have called it back in the 64 bracket, I’ll have to go check. But when the Halloween candy goes on sale Nov. 1, what am I grabbing? The Reese’s. Dec. 26? The Reese’s. Easter Monday? The Reese’s. I love other candies, and on some days I might love Mounds more than anything (hew?), but when it comes down to it, I’m hitting those peanut butter cups and I’m gonna hit them HARD. Woo!

  • DuchessKitty says:

How the holy f*ck is fudge still in this race? And beating Butterfinger?!! Uggh
I mean I hate Kit Kat with a passion, but at least I understand why it’s popular with others. I do not get the appeal of fudge at all. It’s too sweet, in the worst possible way.

  • Peter L. says:

Seeing Peanut M&Ms go down to Snickers was like seeing oatmeal get beaten up last year. Tragedy!

  • Tisha_ says:

It’s sort of scaring me, how I’m getting so worked up over any comments where people do not like RPBCs. Seriously. I’m almost feeling hate. I’m apparently very serious about my favorite candy.

  • cayenne says:

Thank you, Lord, for Holy Fudge to smite the evil Butterfinger, that carcinogenic orange, fake-sugar-flavoured, Crispy Crunch/Clark Bar/Fifth Avenue wannabe. And the karmic bitchslap against Snickers for taking out my Whatchamacallit is much appreciated, as well. Amen.

  • Jeanne says:

PBC for the win! It is my long-held belief that chocolate and peanut butter is the best food combination ever thought of ever, and I will not hear otherwise.

And as another member of the small minority of caramel haters (hi Laura G!), I will never forgive Snickers for taking down my beloved Peanut M&Ms. Never!

  • Kristina says:

Snickers vs. PBC is a battle beyond words. A trip to Friendly’s without a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup sundae is a very sad trip indeed. However, I was pregnant during the great peanut butter scare of 2008, and would not have made it through without the emergency Snickers I always kept in my purse. Salty, chocolately, satisfying Snickers for the win!

  • robin says:

The readers who criticize any candy as “too sweet” (yes I’m talking about the fudge) probably, um, shouldn’t be eating CANDY. Go snack on a celery stick or a rutabaga or somethin’. If a candy’s made of sugar, starch, and fat, that’s what it should taste like.
My Cadbury eggs have run out, so I hit the store this morning for the “75% OFF-Easter Special” on smashed up chocolate-covered marshmallow novelties and stale PEEPS. Gotta love a Russell Stover Strawberry Creme Egg @ 22 cents. Then I received a bag of Secretaries’ Day goodies topped by a Snickers bar, and rememberd why I will be happy no matter what candy wins the final vote. Cause even though Snickers is not my personal favorite, Yes! I ate it and Yes! it was good.

  • jen says:

though I am heartened to see my beloved Twix doing so well, I agree with the others that the winner of the Snickers/RPBC showdown will take it all. And, deservedly so. So long as it’s Reese’s.

  • Alyce says:

RPBC melt too easily. I do not enjoy a messy candy. Plus then you have 4 pieces of trash to throw away: wrapper, cardboardesque strip underneath, and 2 cup liners. Too much trouble.

Snickers also doubles as a snack. It is, as they say, substantialicious.

A Snickers with a cold glass of milk is heaven.

If RPBC wins, I’m going Twix FTW!

  • LTG says:

I like fudge well enough, but I still think homemade treats don’t belong in this competition. Plus, there are a million different kinds of fudge — it’s too broad a category. So I will always vote against it.

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

Ms and KKs in a dead heat!
