NC Double Shot Qualifying Round 2: G-N

Submitted by on April 27, 2011 – 9:28 AM32 Comments

We’ve got too many shots and not enough slots; it’s up to you, dear tippler, to narrow the field.

Things to know: this poll is for drinks beginning with letters G-N, so please don’t freak out all “WHERE’S PIMM’S CUP?!” because it’s in an upcoming poll; you can vote for as many as 10; you can also suggest drinks we may have missed in the comments (again, only drinks that start with G-N); if you haven’t heard of a givendrink, either skip it or pour yourself a Google on the rocks.

Ready? Let’s do it.

This poll makes me want to sidle up to a bar to experiment or at least confirm I am making the right selection. It’s five o’clock somewhere, right?

  • avis says:

The Hurricane needs more love! It’s a required ingredient for visiting New Orleans! Beignets at Cafe du Monde and Hurricanes at Pat O’s!

Plus it’s red, fruity, and alcoholic-isn’t that the ultimate mixed drink?

  • Carrie Ann says:

Wow, all my favorites are in this section, I think. I could live without everything on the A-F list, but you can pry my Gin and Tonic out of my cold dead hands. In fact, I kind of hope that I am holding one when I shuffle off this mortal coil.

Other faves on this list include gimlets, mimosas, margaritas, and greyhounds. And the Horse’s Neck, which I never knew had a name! We make ours with ginger beer, and a squeeze of lime.

  • attica says:

College for me brings back memories of Kamikazes and LI Iced Tea by the pitcher. Bless the ‘tenders that rendered those tipples in such efficient fashion.

  • Jody says:

I didn’t expect this to be on the list but the gin buck is possibly the best cocktail I’ve ever had. Gin, ginger ale and lemon juice. It tastes like summer to me.

  • Lis says:

I’m with Carrie Ann, Who knew my favorite drink of a Bourbon and Ginger could also be called a Horse’s Neck? And I OWN AND BREED horses… you’d think I would know these things!

  • Dsayko says:

Mmm, grasshopper. An Andes mint in a glass. Yum.

  • Cora says:

Forgive me, but hey Maria who commented in the A-F round! Can you tell me what a Bath Towel is? Or anyboyd here? Gregory McDonald has Fletch order a Bath Towel in one of the novels, and both bar receipe books and Google have let me down.

  • Tylia says:

I’m so upset I’m pregnant right now, because I’ve been craving a mojito soooooo bad. There’s something about the lime, mint and alcohol that is soothing to the soul.

  • Robin says:

@Tylia, Orbitz gum comes in a mojito flavor. It’s not bad. Maybe the sugarless gum could stand in the gap while your’re craving?

  • Kristina says:

That is correct- my best friend, Margarita, is taking this sucker TO THE FINALS. Calling this now.

  • Suzanne says:

    LONG ISLAND ICED TEA FTW!!!

Ah, my first ever legal booze. Too bad I was such a naïf that I thought it actually was iced tea. Thus the chugging; thus the spinning of the room, etc.

Also … off-topic, but Sars? This one’s for you, surely:

  • Johanna says:

Is there an American name for a vodka and tonic made with, not tonic, but mineral water (no sugar, no quinine)? Or is this a totally local concept in where I live?
‘Cause that’s my favourite drink (GT is a close second). Tastes like water, only better!

  • Cara says:

Tylia, if you want to make a decent virgin mojito, use a simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water) made with light brown sugar. The little bit of molasses adds some of the taste you get from the rum.

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

@Suzanne: Amazing. He’s the easiest target ON EARTH and it never stops being fun.

  • Jesse says:

Johanna — it’s just a vodka and soda, I believe.

Also, I wish Moscow Mule were doing better! Although I guess the Dark and Stormy can rep for ginger beer.

  • Claire says:

My roommate and I are big fans of going to Sonic, buying one of those 32 oz lime slushes, and then making our own very cheap margaritas. I’ve almost forgotten what a real one tastes like.

  • I have a suggestion for another G-N cocktail: Lemon Drop (vodka, simple syrup, fresh lemon juice, optional triple sec). So delicious and so deadly. In fact, I may have to make some this weekend.

  • Caitlin M says:

I guess Campari really is an acquired taste, given that the Americano and negroni are getting no love (except from me). Ah well, I know lots of peoplec don’t go for the bitter stuff.

I’m okay with margarita’s top rank here, make mine a classic – just tequila, triple sec, and lime on the rocks, maybe a little agave. No sour mix or slushies for me.

  • Stephanie says:

Long Island Iced Tea – one of very few alcoholic beverages whose smell can trigger my gag reflex.

On the plus side, that was a HELL of a party.

  • Amanda says:

OMG KAMIKAZE. The first drink I ever got well and truly soused on. Good memories.

  • Wendalette says:

@PetiteChablis: Oh yes! I nearly forgot that one! My super-cute bartender friend introduced me to the lemon drop. I’m not much for the supersweet drinks (I’m a Guinness girl), but he makes it with the perfect balance of tart and sweet–closer to lemonade than candy — and strong!. Sipping it is totally to next best thing to kissing.
At least it is to me.
(and my friend is even more unbearably adorable though ‘lemon drop lenses’. Too bad he’s not single…)

  • Maria says:

    Hey Cora –

Never heard of a Bath Towel, and my Google-booze-fu is also coming up empty. It’s probably just a Fletch-ism.

Long Island Iced Tea – proof there’s no way to disguise gin from my gag reflex.

    Another vote for the Lemondrop.

  • Michael E says:

Man, I don’t know what I’d do if it comes down to, say, a Long Island (sentimental/college favorite) vs. gin and tonic (old stand-by). It will literally depend on the mood I’m in that very second.

The ginger beer/bourbon composite in my local bar is called the Irish Ass, which makes it all the more awesome.

  • Cathy G says:

I’m with Carrie Ann on this poll–everything I need is right HYEH.

Also, though it is not my #1 fave, I recently discovered that the Chipotle next to my office serves real, actual Margaritas on the rocks (w/ Cuervo) and they are GOOD. Off to lunch then!

  • KB says:

Irish Car Bomb, please! Or just Car Bomb in the earlier category.

  • ferretrick says:

    Irish Car Bomb, Seconded.

  • KTB says:

    Oh, the Car Bomb. Thirded!

  • Daisy says:

Fourthing the Car Bomb. Shot of whiskey dropped into a pint glass of Guinness. Way to make you go from “drunk enough to order a Car Bomb” to “lying on floor hoping someone scoops you into a cab.” A variation is the Butter Bomb, subbing in butterscotch schnapps for the whiskey.

  • Erin W says:

I don’t know if it actually has a name, but my favorite drink is a Jack and tea–half iced tea, half Jack Daniels.

  • Kat says:

The Lemon Drop is one of my primary drinks, but I’ve also seen it on a lot of menus as a lemon martini, so I assumed it was covered in the martini category.

But what about the Mint Julep?

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

    “Julep.” Middle of the list.
