Your arguments regarding "preventative" and "impact" have taken you down the descriptive/prescriptive rabbit hole where the rules of grammar are no longer fixed. Do you use "notice" as a verb? If you do, Benjamin Franklin is rolling in his grave. Usage is always changing and you have to accept it. Using "impact" as a verb is widely accepted and, as much as this pains me to admit, therefore correct.

Perhaps my complaint pushes the boundaries of this thread beyond strictly English usage errors, but I find it maddening that so many restaurants offer "prefix" menus. It's prix fixe!!

As I write this, it occurs to me that perhaps there IS a use for prefix in a menu. It would actually be quite amusing to see the appetizer section headed by the word Prefix. That would make me smile.

The words "preventative" and "irregardless" are both words that are quite comfortably settled in Webster's Dictionary.

Thank you so much for these! I am not very intimidated to write this comment :) Regarding the "web site" spelling, you've mentioned that it's "site" and not "sight"; but is it "web site" or "website"?

Cheers!

Thanks! This is great. These are things I think, but only say privately among friends.
And just for the record, I am the least 'petty' person I know. I will 'abuse' the rules of language when I feel like it, when being funny or simply lazy, but I do know how to use my own language appropriately when appropriate use of language is needed.
I am tired of reading financial statements which refer to my "principle" balance. huh? REALLY?
If ya wanna use slang--go for it. But please save it for casual conversation.

Boy, am I glad to find you guys & your posts! But they way things are progressing (are they actually?), grammar is being made redundant in schools & everywhere else. The schools here(Kolkata-India) have already started accepting the American spellings - color is as correct as colour is and so on. With due respect to all Americans I for one seriously object to this. I think at the end of their school tenure these kids would be a confused lot. My daughter goes to Class-1 & I have had to write notes to her teacher(s) correcting the spellings of Aquatic(Acquatic), Yacht(yatch) etc., & need I say that, that definitely does not make me & in effect my daughter too popular. But I guess our breed isn't too popular anywhere. But its not that bad a life being unpopular. Cheers Sarah, for writing this.
