Save The Day: April 4

Submitted by on April 4, 2011 – 8:56 AM24 Comments

7 PM update

$24,268! Hell of a day at sea, sirs! (And ma’ams!) That means 25K is nigh — and that means another 25K is nigh, compliments of the DonorsChoose.org board of directors! Here’s how it’ll work: Anna of the Infinite Powers will make a note of each Giving Page’s total at the time we cross the 25K line, and tomorrow (Tuesday) morning, she’ll administer a like amount to the most urgent projects on each Giving Page. So, if your GP made $100, she’ll put another $100 towards the most urgent projects.

Outstanding work, ladies and germs. Truly.

But wait! There’s more! In the next day or two, I will introduce a mystery guest to the Buntcave — so stay tuned for the big reveal!

In the meantime? Scroll down. You could win a little somethin’ somethin’ if you donate to a music-based project by midnight ET. Got a Giving Page? Recruit some donors and get a cash boost!

11:15 AM update

…Oh, hi. $20,083, you say? Fair enough. Here’s what I say: it’s 4/4, so let’s get down with a music theme for today’s mini-prize. Donors to any music-related project between now and midnight ET can win an iTunes gift cardone for $20 and three for $10. Maybe some guitars, maybe some homemade clay instruments, maybe some drums for pre-K (come on: micro-bongos?)any music-related project, by midnight. No need to forward receipts on this one.

Got a Giving Page? Scroll down for your challenge du jour.

Less than 5K ’til our first big match — save that Monday, Nation!

9 AM update

Good morning, heroes: $19,650. So so close to 20K — let’s do it by lunchtime ET!

And now a little reward for our Giving Pages, who have done such a fantastic job so far. Lovely reader Amy R. is offering a $25 gift code plus a $25 match to the Giving Pages that can add the most new donors between when I post this and midnight ET tonight (April 4). We want more butts in the seats, friends, and we’ve got five (5) of these $50 code/match prizes — recruit like the wind! (Thanks, Amy!)

In the meantime, the Superpage is here, and watch this space for today’s general mini-prize!

If anyone wants to search our giving page, I have a primitive spreadsheet to search http://tomatohelper.wordpress.com/

    Closing in on 20K, Amazing!!!!!

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

    Nice URL. Heh.

  • Lillie says:

Sars, I gave to Donors Choose for the first time ever last Friday. After one more donation and a donation match, the project was funded. The teacher is ecstatic. What a wonderful feeling. Thanks for supporting such a great cause.

  • Kim says:

So, how does one get a project on the giving page? I have a few teachers at my fav. school I like to support and would love to see them feel the Tomato love!

  • Kona says:

My brain isn’t working yet. How come every time I go to the Superpage link, it only says we’ve raised $6,000 or so? I want to see the 20K!

  • Wehaf says:

May I suggest a mini-challenge? Donating to “urgent” projects, the ones that say “only x days left” in red. Like this one, which is buried deep in the list of projects and as only 11 days left on the clock:

  • anon says:

I just had the pleasure of making the final donation to fully fund a project. Thanks to all of the other donors who did the legwork before me, these kids will now get to meet an author they’re inspired by. Wow – I haven’t felt this good in a long time. Hope the kids enjoy it.

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

@Kim: Instructions are in the FAQ (top lefthand side of each page).

@Kona: When you’re on the Superpage, look on the right; you should see a little leaderboard with “Red Planet” etc. on the top. Click that and you’ll get the totals for the entire challenge.

  • Rain says:

    Micro-bongos, you say…

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

Please make sure project links you post contain the Superpage challenge ID (136864), or that of another Giving Page on the TN leaderboard. Thanks.

  • Ann Davis says:

If you want to help projects that are BOTH URGENT and IMPORTANT take a look at our FIRE! FIRE! Help or We Will Expire in Hours! Fire! Giving Page. So often these projects don’t get noticed so we made a GP just for them!

  • Grandma Donna says:

Going with the music theme of the day we just put 6 music projects that are LESS THAN $50 to complete on the T-Nation Jeopardy Giving Page. CHECK IT OUT!

  • Jennifer M. says:

@Anon – I’m so glad that this project got funded; I didn’t have much to give, but I have great faith in the Nation. I remember how excited I was to meet Jean George when I was in fourth grade (My Side of the Mountain), Katherine Paterson in sixth grade (Bridge to Terabithia, et al), and just 2 years ago Stephen Sondheim. Meeting the creators of works that I have enjoyed was an amazing experience!

  • Val says:

@Ann Davis – Thanks so much for setting up that page! I love the size my Grinchy heart swells to when I get to compete a project. And one from my hometown for a school that HAS NO LIBRARY. So, so tragic. YAY for books!

  • mspaul says:

@Wehaf – I funded that project before I even clicked on your link! Great tomato minds think alike.

  • Wehaf says:

@mspaul – And now it’s fully funded! Awesome!

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

    $25K! Niiiiiiice!

  • Mrs. W says:

THANK YOU, Tomato Nation! I appreciate the $50 that TN citizens Kim and Tom made to our “Bon Appétit: Exploring World Cultures with Food” project. My high-poverty, rural kids can’t wait to get this one funded!

  • Rebecca U says:

    $25K!

I am loving the Fire Fire and the Jeopardy pages – I justed finished off a project that needed $2! I saw that $2 and that paper boy on the bike from Better Off Dead flashed in my head and I had to finish it off.

  • StillAnotherKate says:

That Jeopardy page is awesome. Found a project there that only needed $11. $11!! How could I not hit that??

  • Dawn says:

Oh, I am so excited! The drums for pre-k “micro-bongos” (as you called them) are for my students! (And that word is just making me laugh. IDK, it’s just a funny word. LOL) I’ve been away from the computer most of the day… how I wish I had seen this post earlier! Thank you, Tomato Nation, for all of your support to my students & classroom! Outstanding work on reaching the $25K match!!!!

  • Jennifer M. says:

I just used my mini-prize gift code to fund owl pellet dissection kits, eye ball dissections, and worm composting kits. So much fun for me; hope it is fun for all the kids!

  • Grandma Ann says:

Glad you are loving our FIRE! FIRE! and T-Nation Jeopardy <$50 to complete GP. We like to focus on the URGENT & IMPORTANT projects plus an easy way to find the least amount to complete. Stop by if you haven't visited us yet! Thanks to all who help these classrooms!

  • Wehaf says:

@Rebecca U – Agreed; the Fire Fire and Jeopardy pages are brilliant!
