The Contest 2011: We Could Be Heroes

Submitted by on March 10, 2011 – 2:49 PM23 Comments

Hello, friends. It’s that awesome time again — time to give money to Donors Choose, and maybe win yourself some loot! This year’s campaign kicks off April 1 (yes, I know; no, it’s not a prank).

If you have no idea what that means, click here for an overview of Tomato Nation/Donors Choose contests past. If you DO have an idea and you just wiggled in your chair in anticipation, I hope you can help me out with a few things.

1. Please send me photos of yourself, your pets, your SOs, your kids, and/or your friends dressed as superheroes. Doesn’t matter which one; doesn’t have to be a “real” one (a superhero you made up is fine). As long as you own the photo, and understand that by sending it, you’ve given us permission (but not obligated us) to use it, we want to see it.

2. You can also send me photos of yourself/pets/offspring/etc. looking up into the sky, or out of a window, in a hopeful fashion. Pointing and looking excited is good too. If you’re a teacher, or know any teachers, and you can get me a photo of you and/or your class doing this, that’s even better.

3. Would you like to donate a prize? That’s so nice of you! Gift certificates, crafts ‘n’ yarn, pet toys, books, video games, shirts, whatever you’ve got — get creative! Do you work somewhere that might enjoy getting some free press for a product giveaway? Do you have a gift card lying around that you know you’ll never use? Do you have some credit-card points you could convert into spa days or a trip to Crate and Barrel? Do you rock the needlepoint? I’d really love to hear from you. Please email me at bunting at tomatonation dot com and we’ll work it out.

    YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!!!

  • Dsayko says:

Hooray! I’ve been so (im)patiently waiting for this!

Hooray! The timing here could not be more perfect. A couple of years ago, thanks to inspiration from TN, I got my firm to start giving out DonorsChoose gift cards at our Annual Meeting instead of another stupid tote bag or umbrella. Some people aren’t allowed to accept gifts, and some people are too lazy or forget to use their cards, so after a month the unused portion gets put on one gift card code and I get to distribute it however I want (in general, my most favorite day of the year. Besides the first day of March Madness). And the cards this year expire on March 31, which means that I should have at least $1,000 to spend on April 1!! Win-win-win!!

I would like to confess that I own the vinyl 45 rpm of Joey Scarbury’s recording of the theme from the Greatest American Hero, “Believe it or Not.” I feel kind of inspired to go home and convert that puppy to mp3 so I can have it on my ipod. Sure, the recording quality is kind of cheap and tinny, but that’s part of what makes it awesome.

    Who could it be?
Believe it or not, it’s just me!

  • Mystery Amanda says:

    Yay!

  • LP says:

You guys! How much AWESOME will we bring this time around?

    SO MUCH AWESOME!

  • Julia says:

Yay! I was just explaining this to a friend of mine yesterday!

  • Donna says:

    I’m so excited!!

  • StillAnotherKate says:

What timing! I just donated and finished off a project on Wednesday! (Giving to Donor’s Choose once a week is my Lenten promise. Doing something positive as opposed to giving up something negative equals Kate being a make-it-up-as-you-go Catholic.)

So glad this will correspond with the Nation’s Month o’ Awesome. Can’t wait!!!

  • JL says:

Yay!! This will be my first contest where I am no longer a student of some kind and am actually a job-having person who can contribute in a (hopefully) meaningful fashion!

Question – are you accepting project suggestions, or has that all been decided already?

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

    No project suggestions yet, please.

  • Bria says:

Heh, when I glanced at the title of this post on my iGoogle page this morning, I thought it read “We Could Be Herpes,” which would be a decidedly different slant.

  • Sara J says:

Hooray! And I have an actual job with actual money this time! (as opposed to in October, when I was newly unemployed, so perfect timing!)

  • Mnerva says:

@Still A Kate- that’s acually encouraged by Catholicism…doing something positive instead of “negative” ie, giving something up.”. So kudos for you!

  • Arlee says:

Whew whoo! My kindergarten class took lots of shots today. They are such big hams… like their teacher! I’ll send the pictures on Monday, as I am still waiting for one student permission slip. Thanks again for helping teachers on Donorschoose!

  • MJ says:

This DonorsChoose teacher will enter!!! :)

  • One of my DonorsChoose Facebook friends just posted this contest. It sounds like a wonderful idea. I wish that my school would give out DonorsChoose gift cards at the holiday time. Thank you so much for thinking of this.

Time to put my picture in the contest now.

  • F. McGee says:

I might be an idiot, but I’m going to ask this anyway: Is the superhero stuff a way of supporting/endorsing “Waiting for Superman”? And/or the kind of reforms proposed therein?

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

It’s not an endorsement; it’s just a theme. Everything will be made clear as we head into the contest, don’t worry.

  • Helen says:

DonorsChoose.org and websites like this make a direct impact on today’s youth! My first graders have received computers, math manipulatives, science equipment, P.E. materals…the list goes on and on. Corporate sponsors and private donors offer my inner-city kids advantages that they would not otherwise receive. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all you American heroes and advocates of education out there! :) http://www.donorschoose.org/we-teach/363670

  • KAB says:

@attica: I have “Believe or Not” as an mp3 already and would be happy to send it your way, if you’d like. Just let me know where to send it!

  • Arlee says:

    Come on Friday….I CAN’T WAIT!
