The Vine: August 24, 2012

This is a movie-related Ask the Readers question, driving my husband and me nuts. But I have faith that someone out there in the Nation knows the answer. Here goes: I think the film was made in the late’ 80s/early ’90s (leaning toward ’90s, I think). The main plot is that a brother and sister move from England to Australia to do mining. I think it was silver mining, but could be wrong. I think the sister was the geology-type person, and the brother was a bit of a ne’er-do-well. Not evil, just rudderless, if memory serves.

Significant identifying details: Toward the beginning of the film, they are at a family dinner talking about their plans. The brother quietly builds a Rube Goldberg-type thing out of the assorted stuff on the table. Before he leaves, he reaches out to touch a spoon he has balanced on something, looks at a young boy at the table, and then leaves without touching the spoon. Naturally the young boy touches the spoon and sets off the reaction, causing mayhem. I think a hard-boiled egg rolls down a knife or something as part of it, splashing into something and making a mess.

Once in Australia, the brother cuts up their Bentley (a family car, I think) to make it into a truck to haul rock. Or maybe it was a Rolls?

There’s a scene where the brother is driving the truck using ropes to control it while he sits on the roof.

I think the movie was titled along the lines of “Firstname and Firstname,” but I can’t remember either name (or any other title for it) to save my own life.

Help, anybody? I know you guys can do it!
