The Vine: January 25, 2013

One for the great Red Cloudsource: I watched a movie when I was very young and only remember bits and pieces, but it is now bugging me as I cannot remember the name and I am starting to wonder if I made it up (I didn’t, I promise).

Basic premise: a young blonde girl who LOVED horses and passed one on her way to school every day. When she was a little older there was some weird competition she excelled at where she jumped, with the horse, from the top of a “diving board”-type deal into a pool below.

One of these jumps went wrong and I think she was partially blinded, could be wrong but I can’t remember if this was a permanent injury or just a temporary, partial one.

Other tidbits:

– There is a round cage someone brings to her house that they ride a motorcycle around in and I think they use this as some sort of sensory experience for her, as this part happened after the accident, so she could touch the cage and feel and hear the motorcycle going round in circles.

– oFr some strange reason I keep thinking the lead was Samantha Mathis but it wasn’t. I IMDB’d and definitely not her; I think she was way too young anyway as I believe I saw this anytime from 1980 – 1997ish?

I just read through what I’ve written and it sounds ludicrous but I am convinced this exists, and that I saw it.

Thanks,

M

Hello Tomato Nation! I’m desperate for some suggestions of moisturizers to replace my now-discontinued Dove Deep Moisture Facial Lotion (may it rest in peace). I managed to find a stash at the pharmacy in the tiny country town I live in, but my stash is now dwindling and I can’t afford to pay the astronomical prices for someone else’s stash on eBay.

I’m 30 years old but prone to hormonal cystic acne along my jawline, and everything else I’ve tried (recently Philosophy’s Hope in a Jar and something basic from the Simple line for sensitive skin, and before that most other things I could think of from the pharmacy, including Cetaphil, Oil of Olay, Clean & Clear, Aveeno, and probably many others I’m forgetting — this has been a life-long search) has aggravated my acne. I would describe my skin as somewhat sensitive combination skin, very fair, a little blotchy and prone to getting sunburnt during the summer.

I’m also noticing some crepiness around my eyes, but that’s not my primary concern right now, as at this stage in the game I’m just desperate to get rid of this acne! Or at least not make it worse.

I’m looking for a light moisturizer (I think probably a lotion, rather than a cream), something that won’t cost me an extravagant sum of money, something that has an SPF, and something that is available in Canada. Bonus points if you think it bears any resemblance to my beloved Dove.

Signed,
I’m too old for this shit

  • Been There, LEFT That says:

Question #1 –is Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken with Gabrielle Anwar, if I am not mistaken.

  • Danielle says:

The horse movie is Wild Hearts Can’t be Broken. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103262/?ref_=sr_1

Starring Jake Ryan. I mean Michael Schoeffling. The hotness.

  • Shanchan says:

Is the first one “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken” with Gabrielle Anwar? I don’t think there’s a motorcycle scene but everything else matches.

  • Hellcat13 says:

DAMN IT! For the first time ever I knew the answer to a Vine question and all you keeners beat me!

  • Stephanie says:

Ditto! I was so excited that I knew the answer but everyone beat me to it. They used to show that all the time on Disney Family channel in the 90s.

  • Stephanie says:

Too Old, have you ever looked at the company Lush? They have all natural ingredients and a multitude of different types of moisturizers for all types of skin. I tried their Imperialis one after a string of worthless lotions, and it helped a lot. They are based in Canada and ship all around the world. Maybe see if anything there fits what you need.

Also, I’ve heard a lot of good things about Argan Oil. I have a small bottle from my grandmother who saw this huge QVC/HSN spotlight on Josie Moran’s argan oil line, bought a bunch of stuff, and is in love with it. I’ve used it for a few weeks and it really makes my skin feel great, very soft, less red, etc.. Even though it’s oil, it doesn’t make you feel oily or breakout. I think you can find Josie Moran’s stuff on Sephora. Look into argan oil and see if it would be a fit for you.

For reference, I’ve got very fair skin, usually dry with some oily spots, and I get a few zits here and there every month, some that last awhile (though I feel the above two products have helped a lot).

Good luck; it always sucks the big one when a product you love goes away!

  • Kona says:

Haha. I was sad too! I even remember the exact placement of the VHS in the video store where I used to work!

  • Mary says:

Hey just throwing this out there to the Nation, with its vast knowledge of all the media. Goodreads has a group called “What’s the Name of That Book???” where you can help find books based on a few remembered details — much like the Ask the Readers questions here. Just in case you need to amuse yourself on not-Fridays: http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/185-what-s-the-name-of-that-book

Hope that’s cool to post here, Sars.

  • Carolyn says:

For Letter # 2 – my skin is very similar to your description, down to the hormonal acne on the jawline. Unfortunately, I can’t help with moisturizer (I use Oil of Olay sensitive skin with SPF 15, which it sounds like didn’t work for you), but I want to suggest, if you haven’t considered it already, asking your dermatologist about a prescription for spironolactone. It has made a huge difference in my skin and has had no side effects for me. Sorry I can’t help with the moisturizer but good luck.

  • KL says:

Too Old – I, too, am 30 years old and suffer from hormonal cystic acne, very fair skin, prone to sunburn, and combination (although mine runs very dry in the winter) skin… and I have found that Shiseido (although you’re going to pay a bundle for it…) is just about the only thing I can use that doesn’t aggrevate my skin, and even helps calm it.

    http://www.sephora.com/the-skincare-day-moisture-protection-spf-15-pa-regular-P173634?skuId=986802

Shiseido also has an SPF 40 sunscreen for the face that doesn’t cause me to break out. http://www.sephora.com/urban-environment-oil-free-uv-protector-broad-spectrum-spf-42-for-face-P307405?skuId=1452002

Their entire The Skincare line has been a blessing for me. That, plus my clarisonic, and I find my skin to be pretty manageable! Good luck!!

  • Wehaf says:

I have so much love for Wild Hearts Can’t be Broken!

  • Jen S 1.0 says:

Aarrrrrgh, I was all excited too! I knew one for once!

  • dmcd says:

I have no idea if their products would bear any similarity to the Dove one that worked so well for you, but have you tried Origins? I love their stuff. Good luck! I hate it when you find – and subsequently lose – something you love.

  • dk says:

The reason you think it was Samantha Mathis is because she’s a cliff diver in “How To Make an American Quilt” before life and parenthood ruin her forever.

  • Sarah in Bishop says:

Ditto for being excited to know an answer finally only to be beat to the punch! Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken was the first movie I remember crying at when I saw it in the movie theater as a kid. If you want your fix of present-day Gabrielle Anwar in a guilty-pleasure sort of TV show, I recommend Burn Notice. (Also Jeffrey Donovan, the star, is totally my current TV boyfriend). Just be warned that only the first five seasons are on Netflix watch instantly, and then you will be shut out until they finally get season six up…

  • Erin W says:

I have blotchy, oily, zitty skin that is only just starting to require moisturizer now that I’m in my thirties, especially in our current Arctic chill. I use Neutrogena Healthy Defense Daily Moisturizer with Helioplex. It’s SPF 30, it’s more lotiony than oily, nice and light. I couldn’t find it on amazon.ca, but I expect you can find it anywhere you would regularly see Neutrogena products.

  • Amy Number 512 says:

I have nothing to offer, I just wanted to say that I <3 Jake Ryan.

  • Alison says:

For LW1, have you tried comparing the ingredients list on your Dove product with some of the other brands from the same parent company (St. Ives, Pond’s, Simple, etc.) to see which is closest? You might find a better match for your skin that way.

  • Alison says:

Yeah, that should be LW2, obviously…

  • Jess says:

Letter writer #2, have you given any thought to trying a BB cream? You didn’t mention whether you are ok with a tinted moisturizer, but you have exactly the same skin as I do and I’m finding that it’s doing a good job of keeping my acne in check. I haven’t had any cystic acne in about two weeks and my dry spots and oily spots are evening out really well.

The brand I just tried (Dr. Jart – the Sephora brand not the Korean version you have to get online) isn’t entirely perfect and I probably won’t get it again (it’s not quite enough moisture, the dispenser doesn’t work well, and it smells like cat vomit) but the product works well enough that I know another brand of similar stuff is likely going to be the ticket for me.

  • Molly says:

Too Old, I’m in my 30s with acne-prone (especially hormonal acne), somewhat sensitive, super-oily skin. I use Philosophy’s Clear Days Ahead regimen (I cleanse twice daily and use the toner, acne-controlling lotion, and acne-treatment gel at night). As for daily moisturizer, I’ve been trying Boscia’s Oil-Free Daily Hydration SPF 15 for about the last month and I’m pretty pleased with it so far. Having oily skin means hydration isn’t a huge issue for me, so YMMV, but the Boscia lotion is light and doesn’t seem to be gunking up my skin/pores. I also use First Aid Beauty 5-in-1 Eye Cream at night — it’s one of the few eye creams I’ve found that doesn’t bother my sensitive eyes, and it’s pretty good with puffiness/tiredness.

Two things I can’t recommend highly enough: a Clarisonic brush and Ole Henriksen Truth Serum Collagen Booster. The Clarisonic is a bit of a splurge, but I definitely feel like my skin is cleaner and softer when I use it, and my acne breakouts don’t linger as long as they do when I’m not using it. As for the Truth Serum, I had this deep crease beginning to form on my forehead, and after I’d used the Truth Serum for several days, it was GONE. So good.

  • Kari says:

I was so excited I knew the movie, but of course many TNers beat me to the answer. Part of the movie (including the scene where she goes blind) was filmed at my uncle’s house at Myrtle Beach, so it is a movie that is near and dear to my heart. (Imagine a very awkward tween and her excitement at vacationing in the same place where the extremely attractive male lead once stood.)

  • B says:

Seconding the suggestion for Neutrogena Healthy Defense Daily Moisturizer with Helioplex. Although I think mine is SPF 50 since I am pale as all get out. It is very nice and light.

  • Nicole says:

For the face lotion, this doesn’t have an SPF, but I love it – the Garnier gel moisturizer. I live in the cold, windy upper Midwest and it has really helped my face stay hydrated this year. Even with the heat running 24/7. I have not noticed any acne issues with it. My daughter (who’s four and has sensitive skin) uses it without complaint which is great because she loathes the feeling of lotion. It’s not expensive and pretty easy to find – I picked mine up at Target. Good luck! Acne is the pits – I’m about to crash into my 40’s and still have it.

  • JenV says:

LW#2, this is totally not a lotion recommend (I use Aveeno), but have you ever tried using bentonite clay masks? I buy a huge tub of powdered bentonite clay called Aztec Secret and make my own masks about once a week with just the clay and raw apple cider vinegar. It has improved my skin a *lot*. Occasionally I will break out after, but I feel like that’s just because it’s pulling crap out of my skin. And it dries tight as balls, so if I already have a zit growing the mask helps bring it to the surface faster so it can heal. Anyway, it’s one of the first things I’ve ever tried that has made a marked difference clearing up my acne, so I thought I’d suggest it to you.

  • Judy says:

Sara in Bishop- I caught an episode of Burn Notice on a random Saturday afternoon and I KNEW I recognized her from somewhere!

  • kategm says:

@HellCat: I know, right? As soon as she mentioned the horse diving, I was jumping up and down going, “I know that movie! I know that movie!”
And y’all already guessed it :-)

What I remember best about that movie is that her boyfriend proposes to her right before a dive (can’t remember if it’s before she’s blinded or after) and it’s in front of everyone and he makes a speech about how he could only afford a tin ring b/c of the Depression, and the crowd was “aww”ing the whole time.

  • Maria says:

I knew the movie, too…very depressing! But oh how I loved “How to Make An American Quilt”. I still have the book, and I don’t keep a lot of books.

I agree with the suggestion of seeing a dermatologist. I used spironolactone for chin hairs and it worked great. The only issue with it is that you shouldn’t be on it if you are trying to conceive. It blocks the action of testosterone (elevated T can cause hair and skin issues in women) and would be deforming to a baby boy. I think once you clear that up, you should have a lot more choices in skin care, and best of all you’d avoid the pain of the condition. Who knows, maybe there is another medication that would work better. It certainly sounds like you should pursue treatment so your life would be that much better without the problem.

  • Krissa says:

@Too Old: I know this sounds crazy – I know! – but I’ve had amazing luck with the oil cleansing method. Basic philosophy is that detergents in cleansers cause overproduction of oil, because it strips it ALL away. Cleaning with oils actually helps balance your skin/unclog pores/makes rainbows in your general vicinity. I was highly skeptical of this, but moving to New Mexico left my face all itchy and dry and breaky outy and…the oil works. I use an equal mix of castor oil and coconut oil, and I marvel at how soft and clear my skin is.

  • Amanda Mysteriosa says:

I remember that movie but keep conflating it with Ice Castles, which is causing a very weird mental mashup.

I’m 27, so fair a running joke among my friends is that I am actually a vampire, and tend to burning and combo skin. I can’t say how similar it is to Dove (and it doesn’t have SPF) but I’ve liked Yes to Tomatoes Repairing Acne Lotion. Google says it’s available in Canada at Shoppers Drug Mart.

Someone else recommended the Clarisonic face brush, which I have heard RAVE reviews about. However, if you just can’t talk yourself around to spending that much, the Olay X Extreeeeem!11!! whatever it is (…Olay Pro X, apparently) is a pretty reasonable alternative that I have had good luck with.

  • Cat_slave says:

@Too old – Does it really have to have SPF? I always get a rash and quite often zits if I use a moisturizer with SPF. But if I use something under, give it time to dry and add sunblock on it, if needed, it helps. But I just need it in the summertime, here in the north. Right now I use Celestial from Lush, which is made for sensitive skin, and isn’t so scented as most of their stuff.

  • flyingbird says:

Also with the Neutrogena…I used to use the Healthy Defense that others have already recommended, but in the last year switched to the Rapid Wrinkle Repair with SPF 30. No aggravation of acne, and I think it brightens/evens out skin tone to smooth the blotchies. I also like Neutrogena’s “On-the-Spot” Acne Treatment for those occasional breakouts.

When I’ve had to switch moisturizer, I do find it takes a couple weeks for my skin to adjust, so you might expect problem skin for a bit with whatever brand you try.

  • Amanda says:

Too old: If you have access to Target, try the Boots line. They have some really light day lotions that are SPF $15 (and are cheap!). I have dry, sensitive skin and I love it.

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

PSA: You really need to wear SPF every day. Get a specialty formulation if you need to, but the sun is not getting any weaker, and it’s still doing its thing even when it’s cold out. Zits > melanoma on your face. Just sayin’.

  • Linda says:

For question 2: I have really sensitive skin, and had acne for a long time until I started doing the oil cleansing method. For morning moisturizer / sunscreen, the only one that is gentle on my skin is DML Daily Facial Moisturizer Spf 25. I think my dermatologist gave me a sample of it at some point. I order it from Amazon and just really love it. It feels light and doesn’t smell too sunscreeny either. Good luck!

  • Lisa says:

I second the recommendation to Yes to Tomatoes. I use the moisturizer at night and it has really helped prevent those cystic, hormonal zits. I use the Yes to Carrots moisturizer in the morning because it has SPF and it hasn’t seemed to aggravate any zit problems. Plus it’s a pretty inexpensive brand.

  • Laurie says:

For question #2, I have very sensitive skin as well, and I’ve been using Burt’s Bees Night Cream Moisturizer for a few months, and I love it – it’s toned down any lingering breakouts, and has been great for moisturizing my skin. You can pick it up at places like Shopper’s Drug Mart or Wal-Mart… (I’m also in Canada… :) )

  • megster1971 says:

I second the recommendation for a script for Spironolactone/Aldactone. My skin regimen is pretty much all Obagi products (not cheap, but it’s the only one, seriously, that doesn’t piss off my skin) and Revision moisturizer w/SPF 45.

And I second again (and again!) the recommendation for good sunscreen DAILY. I thought I didn’t need it in PA winters. Turns out I did (3 squamous cell carcinomas and lots of actinic keratoses that cost a lot to fix up cosmetically after they were removed.)

  • Kari says:

Too Old, I can recommend Paula’s Choice, both the products (some lotions that might work for you include this one and this one), the skincare advice (this, for example), and recommendations for other bands of skincare (sunscreen recommendations). I don’t work for them, but I have had excellent results from both their products and advice!

  • Lis says:

Too Old, I also have VERY sensitive skin and used to constantly break out, then I went to an allergy doctor and found out that I’m allergic to tree nuts… which, I mean I can’t tell you how many almonds I used to consume. It could have killed me, but my allergy generally presents itself in what I THOUGHT was acne but what was really an allergic reaction. Basically what I’m saying is maybe get yourself tested. So many moisturizers have almond milk or almond oil in them that I was thinking were great for my sensitive skin and were really hurting me. I had no idea, and two months later just avoiding things I’m allergic to has changed the texture of my skin in an amazing way.

Alternately, BEFORE I knew about my insane allergy I had started using argon oil and had great results… also, you’re probably dehydrated… I know it sounds silly but drinking enough water alone can do wonders for your skin. I found that the LESS products I used the better my skin looked. Drink tons of water, use something super natural and gentle like coconut or argon or even olive oil and try to make sure there’s not an alternate cause. Good luck!

  • Too Old says:

LW#2 here! Thanks so much for all of the helpful suggestions. I love trying new products, so I will have to give these a shot over the next few months as my budget allows, and see if anything works. I’ve been using Olay Sensitive (which I thought had SPF 15, although I just checked and it doesn’t, so this isn’t a good long-term solution) in the evening plus a BB cream most mornings, and I find that combination is … okay. Room for improvement! (Especially considering there’s no SPF in either of those.)

  • Jo says:

Oh, man. I finally know the movie in one of these questions and everyone beats me to it. I’ve never actually seen it, but remembered the commercial.

For your sensitive skin, I’d also recommend Origins. You could also go to Sephora, explain the situation, and they’ll give you some samples of stuff you might try. You might also want to try using some coconut oil on your skin at night (buy a jar at the store, keep it in the fridge so it stays solid, and rub a few flakes on at night. You’ll smell like dessert but it makes your skin nice and soft after a few uses).

Also, I haven’t used the Clarisonic brush, but I have the cheap Oil of Olay version and use it with my Origins cleanser and it does a great job. If your skin is dry, the brush cleans off the dead skin and that somehow helps the moisturizer you do use work better.

  • Krissy says:

These are my fave products, Too Old.

    Night: Dermalogica Active Moist

    Day: ASAP Sheet Tint Moisturiser

  • Krissy says:

Uh, that would be Sheer Tint. Sorry.

  • Lindsay says:

I have the same skin problems as Too Old, and I’m a decade older! I strongly recommend Arbonne’s RE9 line — they have a face cream that I use every day that has SPF20 and an eye creme that I not only use every day but also used for my family’s holiday white elephant gift exchange when my brother (3 years younger than me) asked me why I don’t have crazy crow’s feet like every other member of my family!

  • Jen H says:

What Amy #512 said (Jake Ryan…sigh…).

As far as the second letter, I’m 40 with fair, sensitive, oily skin (according to La Streisand, oily’s the way to go, re: aging, but sucks in the meantime according to me). I’m pleased with Neutrogena’s Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Anti-Blemish, found @Ulta for under $15 a tube, and it lasts awhile because you don’t have to gob it on.

    Good luck:)

  • ss says:

@Cat_slave and others with sunscreen issues – also check what kind of sunscreens the product uses. I’ve found that my skin gets all itchy and unhappy with chemical sunscreens (octinoxate, oxybenzone, octisalate, avobenzone, homosalate, helioplex, etc.) but is relatively fine with physical sunscreens (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide). Since a lot of SPF-included products use chemical sunscreens, I stay away from them and use a separate sunscreen. The Neutrogena Baby and Sensitive lines both use physical sunscreen.

Also, try a moisturizer with turmeric or neem oil in it – they are anti-inflammatory and have calmed my skin down a whole lot.

  • Katie says:

I’m late to the party but have to add a comment about my favorite moisturizer. Thanks to an article in Real Simple about 10 years ago, I have used Eucerin’s Q10 anti-wrinkle lotion with SPF 15. I use differin and clindamycin on my face for acne every day, and this lotion has been a good moisturizer without being greasy and easily goes under makeup. It’s usually around $10 US per bottle. I highly recommend it; I have switched over the years to more expensive things but have always come back.

  • Soph says:

I agree that you need SPF, but echo the readers above who asked if you need it in your moisturizer. Chemical sunscreens can really be bad for your skin, while physical sunscreens are more effective and less likely to cause you to break out. If you find your dream moisturizer, but it doesn’t have SPF, consider trying one of the mineral powders that contain SPF. I really like the SkinScience one, which I get from my esthetician, but you can get other brands at the drug store or at Sephora.
