The Vine: July 20, 2012

The Nation may be my last hope in tracking down this long-lost childhood book. Here’s what little I remember:

  • The family might have been animals — elephants, maybe?
  • The family lived in a house made of cake.
  • The little girl ate the house while her mother was out. She went to the wishing well to wish the house back. This didn’t work because the person ahead of her wished that the wishing well would disappear, and it did.

I read this probably the early to mid-’80s. But I don’t know when it was published. Google was no help — though it did turn up at least one other person asking about this book, giving the same few details. So at least I can know I didn’t hallucinate this.  Any ideas?

I Have NO Idea Why This is Still in My Head
