The Vine: June 9, 2006

Hi Sars,

I am a Canadian who lives in the Washington, DC area, and has been living in
the States now for nearly six years. During that time, I have sporadically
looked for a) a financial planner who’s familiar with either side of the
border (namely 401(k)s and RRSPs and their repercussions) and b) a lawyer
who could write me a simple will (I have no dependents) that would hold up
on either side of the border. I have had no luck with either, short of
finding immigration lawyers, which isn’t quite what I need.

I know you’ve
lived in both countries too, and thought it was worth a shot on the off
chance you know anyone at all. If you feel like it opening it up to Vine
readers that’s totally cool with me.

J

Dear J,

I didn’t live in Canada long enough to switch financial managers or attorneys — I just stuck with the Stateside ones I already had — but I’m sure our DC readers can suggest some resources.

Readers: hit it. (And if you wouldn’t mind, please put the names of the firms or individuals themselves in an easily cut/paste-able format. Thanks!)

Hey Sars,

I’m moving to Brooklyn at the end of the month. This is totally awesome, though I am Canadian and won’t be able to work legally. But meh, I’ll deal. My real problem is that I need to find a cheap gym! Do you know of any? Perhaps your readers may be able to help? I’ve tried searching online but haven’t come up with much. I’ll be living in Williamsburg…was thinking there might be some little neighbourhood gym that is cheaper than a big chain?

Thanks for your help!

Job? Who Needs a Job I Need A GYM!

Dear Gym,

My brother just joined a great Y on Atlantic; it’s not local to you, but you might check out the local Y in Billyburg and see if it’s good (some of them are kind of run-down).

I’m not familiar with that part of Brooklyn; readers, hit it.

Dear Sars,

While this question isn’t, strictly speaking, important — as in, about an actual human relationship gone awry — finding the answer may very well save me from insanity, so I feel that it’s worth asking. Also, your readers have been really good at these “thoughts from the masses” questions.

When I was in elementary school or junior high (so, late ’80s/early ’90s), I remember watching a very briefly aired evening television series that was set in a high school and involved the teachers (and the students? I’m fuzzy on that point) breaking into song, just like a movie musical. The only really specific thing I can remember is that one of the female English teachers (who was the “hot one” on whom all the male students had crushes) at one point had a song that went: “Soft and round as a peach — that’s a figure of speech.” Yeah, it was just about as cheesy as it sounds. (I can also picture the actress’s face, but…it’s not like that’s helping me in my quest.)

If either you or your readers can shed any light as to the name of this show, I would be extremely grateful. Several hours of bored-at-work IMDB and Google searching have turned up nothing.

Sincerely,

I may be a little too obsessed with TV

Dear TV,

Join the club. Heh. That show doesn’t ring any bells for me, but that was a period in my life when I watched very little TV myself, so let’s see what the readers have to say.
