I’m trying to help my mom find a slip to wear under a formal dress for my wedding this summer.

She bought a beautiful chiffon gown, but it’s a bit clingy around her lower mid-section, and then narrows past the hips instead of flowing out. She’d like to find a stiff slip to give the dress a bit more structure and avoid that clinginess. Preferably A line, but not turning it into a ballgown. We were thinking maybe in a taffeta? She is around a size 18-20.

We’re located in Canada, so online options would be great.

Thanks, Nation! I know you can help us.

Signed,

Slipless in Seattle (but really, Canada)

I think my first stop would be Modcloth.

Try these? Any of the Style 100 or 101 look like they might work. If not, refine your search by looking for bridal/formalwear slips or crinolines. Regular slips are not going to do the job–they’re meant to smoothe the line on the body.

If you can’t find what you like online, consider asking a dressmaker to build a slip into the dress. It may be more expensive, but you can get the exact look your mom wants.

    Congratulations! Have a wonderful wedding!

HerRoom.com might be able to help you out. But given that you’re looking for something with a bit of structure to it, then maybe one of the bridal places would be helpful?

  • Cassie says:

It may be more than she wants to spend, but you may also want to check into local seamstresses – they’ll be able to do exactly what she wants without having to deal with “buy-and-return”, which is what happened with MY mom’s dress for my wedding :)

Also, etsy.com might be a good place to try – lots of options there.

Can you link to a similar dress? Because I’m picturing something cut on the bias and that would not really go well with a slip to give it structure.

I assume most bridal stores would sell slips of varying amounts of shape and structure, no?

I’m a fan of ordering slips off Etsy. You can often order custom jobs that will (hopefully!) give you exactly what you need. Best of luck.

OP here – you guys are the best! I do think going with a local seamstress is going to be our best bet. The ones on Etsy seem tempting, but as the wedding is a month away now (eek!) we’re a bit worried that they won’t be just right. Sharon, that one is exactly the right concept, but maybe a bit too thin (trying for a bit more structure). Thank you everyone for all your help and kind words!

I’m not sure if the Vermont Country Store will have exactly what you’re looking for, but they do have a lot of more traditional slip styles that are getting harder to find, including the kind that are basically culottes, which I love in the summer because I have stupid thick thighs. They do ship outside the US, but you have to call for info on prices and times, apparently.
