The Vine: November 30, 2012

A Vine question from my brother…who is single. And lives in Seattle. And needs a girlfriend. But anyway, he had a movie question, and as my normally encyclopediac movie brain has failed me, I’d like to turn this over to the Nation. Especially gals who live in Seattle. [wink]

“I am trying to remember the name of a movie from childhood. It was on HBO when we originally moved to Texas in 1976, I think. It was a colonial period piece, I want to say it was set partially in the Middle East or India and involved some woman who was following some dude around the world, as I recall he was a soldier with some sort of cavalry helmet at one point. I want to say she was either wealthy or a noble of some sort, but the love was unrequited. The last scene involved her stumbling through some dusty market dressed in a tattered black dress, she might have lost her mind, and she comes across the dude who doesn’t recognize her. Does this sound even vaguely familiar?”

Nation, I promise, my bro is a prize.

Jennifer

Dear Jennifer,

“Tomatchmaker, tomatchmaker…” No clue on the movie, but if any of you Pacific-Northwest single ladies want to sign up for Operation JenBro, we’ll see you in the comments. (Wear red. Gives your face a nice glow.)

Sars,

I have been looking for something for years but only at certain times of the year and just realized that The Nation would be the best resource ever. I want Christmas-themed sheets for a queen-sized bed — that are not flannel. Flannel is lovely and soft and warm and I cannot get to sleep on it because the heat it drives me crazy. I suppose since Christmas sheets are a winter thing in the U.S., people assume you want warm sheets and so every Christmas/holiday sheet I’ve seen has been flannel.

Does anyone have a link to a holiday/Christmas/winter sheet set in plain old cotton? Looking for something with red/green/white colors, pattern not a huge issue. Although sleeping on a manger scene would be odd.

Is Australia Amazon a Thing?

Dear Oz,

Best I could find in 10 minutes of Googling: the green/red polka-dot percale sheets at Garnet Hill. I kinda like ’em because the holidayness is subtle; they’re available in all sizes. Readers, let us know what else you find.

Could the movie be The Wind and the Lion? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073906/ This is a few years later, maybe Caravans? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077296/?ref_=fn_tt_tt_1

I was going to recommend The Company Store online for Oz because they have quality stuff and some cute holiday prints. Unfortunately, a quick browsing revealed that their holiday prints appear to be flannel. Not what you’re looking for, I know, but if you ever DO want flannel, they have some good stuff. My mom just ordered me the microfiber fleece sheets for Christmas (I’ll act surprised when I open the present) and they’re awesome. Have you tried Amazon, Overstock, Target, department stores?

As for Jennifer’s brother, I live in Los Angeles but I could relocate for the right guy. ;)

No clue about the movie title but I’m on board for Tomato Nation: the Musical!

Christmas sheets–try searching using Organic cotton. They may not have Christmas patterns but they might have Christmas colors. If you’re handy with a sewing machine–make your own! You’ll need excellent quality fabric and you’ll have to make sure to be very careful about cutting with the grain but it can be done. You may be able to find fabric on line that’s the right width but if not, there will be a seam down the middle, but who really sees it? I’ve made sheets by taking an old set, undoing all the seams, etc. and using them for the pattern pieces.

The movie, or the description of the end, reminds me of The Sheltering Sky, with Debra Winger and John Malkovich. The rest doesn’t really fit, but he might check it out, it’s a great, moody piece.

I live in Seattle but am already married–a huge tragedy, I know. (I mean, not for me, but clearly a life shattering thing for your brother who’s never met me!) If he wants a job, I could hook him up at the phone center for Pagliacci Pizza–lots of nice single girls!

  • Anne-Cara says:

Oz: Maybe these from Pottery Barn?

  • Sarah says:

Movie: Sounds like the Truffaut film “The Story of Adele H” to me. Although I remember the ending as being she is so far gone that SHE doesn’t recognize HIM.

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073114/

That is a great movie, BTW.

Alas, I live in Los Angeles..and I’m willing to bet that this single lady is WAY too old for the kind reader’s brother. :)

  • Clover says:

I have an awesome single female friend who lives in Seattle. How old is Brother? My friend is in her late 30s. She is smart and attractive and really funny.

Here is how good a friend she is: she went to the Mariners’ Cheezburger Night for me–and the Mariners SUCKED that year–to help me obtain a bobblehead cat for my little sister. She has also helped me get my father’s pickup unstuck in the snow and has helped me make a cake that involved Gummi Worms.

  • Kim says:

The Company Store (dotcom) tends to be flannel-specific with their holiday patterns, but they also have really lovely solids and stripey/polkadot patterns in jersey knit or cotton, and you could go mixy-matchy to create your own holiday look. Plus there’s a faux-down throw blanket with penguins on skis!

Meanwhile, I’m single in Seattle! I’m 42 and if Brother can remember a movie from 1976 I wouldn’t be robbing the cradle toooo much, no? I think we could all do far worse than to be set up by the Nation, so hey, hi, Brother! :)

  • Jennifer says:

Bing bing bing!!! Sarah got it! It was indeed The Story of Adele H! Thanks a million for your help, Nation, and I shall pass along the meet and greet offers. ;-)

  • Jill says:

I’m married, but I have single friends in Seattle! Where can we learn more about this wonderful brother? Any brother of a Tomato Nation reader has to be cool.

  • avis says:

Oz here- Thank you for all of the suggestions. I tried over the weekend to pick up some of these things, particularly the red/green dots which were adorable, but every link I followed had “No longer available.” I did find the Target sheets which were very cute but were actually orange instead of red. I almost bought them but the orange didn’t work with my comforter.

I may have to stick to red and white strips, which won’t be nearly as perfect but will do. Although thinking about it I might be able to find some red dots and add my own green…

    Thank you!

  • Brigid says:

Oz – You could go with a duvet cover and shams instead of doing sheets?

    http://www.potterybarn.com/products/cardinal-duvet-cover-sham/?cm_src=AutoRel2

  • avis says:

@Brigid, that is a lovely duvet. I actually have a Christmas quilt in reds and greens which is why I was hoping for sheets to go with it. Given how everything is a set nowadays I have no idea how I ended up with a comforter and no sheets but that’s where I stand.

    Thanks!

  • Rachel says:

Oz–If you already have a Christmas quilt, you might want to try just buying a top sheet in green and a bottom in red, or vice versa, and then getting separate pillowcases. You should be able to find Christmas pillowcases pretty easily, or they would be fairy simple to make yourself.

  • Amy says:

Wouldn’t it be great if we created a Tomato Nation love connection?
