X-Files Rewatch: Season 5
So, I started rewatching The X-Files from the beginning — or, really, “watching it,” because during the series’ run, I came in late and only watched casually. It holds up pretty well almost 20 years later, despite those horrendously budge credits, but you get some hilarious guest stars along the way, so I decided to tweet alternate titles for some of the episodes.

I remember this season as the one where Fox manipulated the promos to the point where you pretty much knew as soon as a promo scene showed up in an actual episode it was a dream or hallucination. (I’m still kind of pissed about the “devil tree” episode being about a devil tree instead of the alien as shown in the promos.)
However, Bad Blood (5-12) remains a favorite to this day and Luke Wilson is super hot in it.
I remember the Stephen King one and being disappointed. As you would be.
Speaking of conspiracies and love, have you heard the rumor that Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny might totally be together in real life? I know, I know, none of my business blah blah blah but OMG the part of me that never left the nineties is squealing with joy!
The X-Files was *not* 20 years ago! It was *not*!
We used to have swamps, only the EPA made us take to callin ’em “whetlands”
I was seeing “X-Files” very intermittently (as in, three episodes in five years of college) and I remember the Evil Baby Doll one being actually kind of okay…at least, it’s okay as a single weird show that you watch one time. I have no idea how it held up to the rest of the series.
Whitney, I’m sitting right beside you at the “Love Bad Blood and Hey, Luke Wilson is Super Hot (and Adorably Goofy with the Fake Teeth)” table.
I remember there was a sizeable to-do at the times on the alt.tv X-Files forums (… hi, I’m old) about the meaning of the title, but S05E10 convinced me that “chinga” must be Chiapas-area dialect for “big whoop.”
I loved “Bad Blood”, though, from its “Oh shi –” opening onward. And “… Because, Obviously” has retro-funtimes, like Mulder’s “cellular telephone” the size of a challah.
S05E13 Alternate title: “Seriously.”
Oh how I loved Bad Blood. My friends and I watched that easily 20 times together over the years. I can still quote Scully’s “I do it all for you, Mulder…It wasn’t even real cream cheese” speech.
“Shut Up, Krycek: A Russian Novel”
Awesome. I would so read that novel.
This was my first season, and during episode 2 I remember thinking, “Do they always have such long, boring voice-overs?” It’s amazing that I kept watching it.
Bwah, Kim, EVERY time people start talking about light cream cheese, I snicker inside and think, “it wasnt’ even REAL cream cheese, it was LIGHT cream cheese!!” I really loved that episode.
and I’m pretty sure that alt.tv.x-files was the original internet wormhole, down which many unsuspecting people fell and came out believing it was imperative to know episodes by titles and watch and re-watch them to catch every nuance…notthatieverdidthat.
“Bad Blood” = Best episode of any 90s series, ever. Bar none.
The King-penned episode makes me mad to this day, for three reasons:
1. King-penned.
2. Maine in late winter/early spring? NOT T-SHIRT WEATHER, people.
3. I hate anything that actually makes me think that throat-punching a little kid would help the situation. But in this ep, it very quickly began to look like a great idea, and that is wrong. I hate you, Stephen King, you spankhole.
