I just finished taking a course in creative writing at Stanford.Everybody wore black and looked moody.I wore a Hawaiian shirt and shorts – and I was happy.I’ve now signed up for a “fundamentals of acting” course at the same illustrious school. What should I wear?Should I invest in some black apparel and a scowl or can I stick with the schtick I know?

Dear Palm,

If you invest in black apparel, do it because it hides stains, not because your classmates wear it.I majored in English with a concentration in creative writing and I wore a ton of black – not because of my studies, mind you, but because black is slimming, matches everything, and doesn’t show a thing when you accidentally dump twenty-four ounces of coffee down your front during a humanities lecture.

Not that I ever did that or anything.
