The Ticket Out: Darryl Strawberry and the Boys of Crenshaw
A good, worthwhile read, but sometimes a little much with the I Get It attitude…by which I mean that, sometimes, sportswriters will take it upon themselves to lecture the reader on attitudes about athletics and the inner city, and that kind of I-know-the-waterfront thing would be okay if it were, like, Eric Davis telling us a few things about coming from a particular background. From a guy who only has secondhand insight gleaned from the process of writing a book, I don’t love it. Sokolove is a good writer and the book is worth a look, but sometimes that tone can bug.
