Ghost Ship
It isn’t a good movie, but it really had potential, and I have to say that the montage is the best part — although it’s not so much “best” as “most interesting,” and it gets a lot of work done that the script should have taken care of. So, it’s a cheat, as a montage often is, but when the twist is suggested, the movie finally starts to emerge as something worth thinking about. Prior to that, it’s an undistinguished mess, but when the exposition gets busted out and the exact nature of the ship’s ghostliness becomes apparent, it’s like, oh…hey, that brings up some fascinating questions about…wait, it’s over? If they’d focused more on the “spiritual” implications and less on the hackneyed make-’em-jump stuff, it could have been good. Oh, well. Ron Eldard is cute in it so it’s not a total loss. Maybe the hinted-at sequel will be better. Okay, probably not. (3/29/04)
