Borderlines
The cross-cutting is a little heavy-handed for me, but it works better and gets more fluid as the book goes on, and the portrayal of Jane is pitch-perfect. The woman is maddening. So is the author, actually, at the time she describes, and by the end, you can’t put it down for wondering how she’s going to get out of it. Anyway, structurally it’s twee, but she’s excellent at characterization. A good, fast read about toxic friendships. (6/7/04)
