Around the cineblogosphere
That is not a word, and shouldn’t be; I apologize. Let me make it up to you with some links! First, The Onion‘s AV Club reviews The Pride Of The Yankees and Eight Men Out on DVD (Scott Tobias is more forgiving of the latter than I).
For the non-baseball fans in the crowd, the Film Pigs take on Road House (download and listen here, or check iTunes to subscribe). Get well soon, Swayze!

One of the other blogs I frequent recently bemoaned the treatment of Swayze by the National Enquirer. Apparently, they’ve been stalking him in order to capture photographs of him -gasp! smoking.
Because if he’s in cancer treatment, then he should obviously quit the cigs RIGHT NOW. The implication being that if he doesn’t, he deserves what he gets.
Never mind that pancreatic cancer is almost always fatal, particularly if you’re diagnosed after symptoms have already appeared. Never mind that this is a terribly stressful time for him and his long-time wife, and that he’s smoked heavily for YEARS. Never mind that it can take a looong time to figure out who you are without the cigarettes after you quit. Never mind that it’s not actually any of their business.
Christ on a crutch, I wish they’d step off.
Sorry for the rant, I lost my Grandad to pancreatic cancer, and I’m a little sensitive about the subject.
Get well soon, Patrick.
In the words of the esteemed Michael J. Nelson, “all films must be judged on one criteria only–how well they stand up to Road House. For Road House is, without question, the single finest American film.”
Get well, Patrick!
I’m with Jen on that one. I mean Road House has Sam Elliot for Lord’s sake! :) I too wish Patrick well.
As a bizzare aside, Scott Tobias was my boyfriend in college. How small the world is!
What mystifies me about Swayze’s smoking is this: Hasn’t he always been Mr. Dancing Guy? And isn’t his wife a dancer too? I don’t know the first thing about professional dancers, but I would think they’d…not smoke. This is not to be judgmental about smoking, just practical. Doesn’t smoking impair your lung capacity, which would make it harder to do anything strenuous?
I hope he gets well, too. Cancer truly sucks.
Jaybird, what’s worse is that I’m a music major and I know a lot of vocalists (female especially) who smoke. Dancers tend to pick it up because it helps curb appetite and dancers I know feel a lot of pressure to stay skinny, and singers do it because it can deepen your voice, at least temporarily. In the long run, it’s a really bad idea, but that doesn’t stop people from starting.
Get well soon, Mr.Swayze.
Thanks, Jen, for the Mike Nelson shout out! Remember, “pain don’t hurt.”
Yeah, a lot of dancers take up smoking to 1) stay thin and 2)get an energy boost from the nicotine. Dancing is aenerobic (sp?) so you can smoke like a chimney and not have it interfere with your “wind” or stamina. A runner, for instance, would feel the effects of smoking on her performance sooner than a dancer would. Until the cancer levels the playing field, that is.
On another note, I highly recommend checking out agonybooth.com and reading their gut-splittingly hilarious recap of Road House. They’ve given several shout-outs to TWoP in the past, and believe me, it’s worth it.
Well, that makes sense. I have the athletic gifts of a clam, and as such wouldn’t have known that.
