My friends and I are throwing a birthday slumber party for a friend of ours. We want to make gift bags like we got when we were kids and we want to put slap bracelets in them. Because slap bracelets = awesome! Do you or your readers know anywhere here in NYC I can get slap bracelets? Or online for quick shipping?

Oriental Trading definitely has them in an assortment of colors and themes (I don’t know if they still have the “WWJD” version, but I guess what He’d do is…have a slap bracelet. Hee).Fred Flare is a great source for that type of thing; while they don’t appear to have slap bracelets at the moment, the six-for-$18 jumbo cocktail ring set is a pretty sweet party favor.

Oriental Trading somehow knew that I moved from NJ to TX, and then moved again within TX. I get catalogs in my new house, even though I haven’t ordered anything since grad school. In 2004. 1500 miles away.
But for a room full of inflatable monkeys? Can’t be beat.
Dollar stores! Either in the party section or up by the till.
Also, small, independent toy sellers (ie: not Toys R Us) often have them in their party bins.

The shipping is pretty quick at OT as well. I ordered some personalized pencils on a Wednesday and I got them the following Monday.
I swear to god I read that as “jumbo cock ring set”.

I only discovered slap bracelets this past March, when my 10-year-old nephews introduced me. I was so delighted that I just kept slapping them over and over and laughing hysterically. They thought I was insane.
Do you know what slap bracelets are made of? It is a fabric-covered piece of a venetian blind slat. Hee! Sorry if this kills the magic, but I’m flashing back to my days as a Girl Scout leader–we made slap bracelets as a Day Camp craft and the girls went mad with joy.
Whoa. Thanks, Princess Leah! I do arts and crafts with kids at a summer camp, and my dad installs blinds for a living, so I have got to give this a try!
Oriental Trading Co. is THE BEST… I can’t read the catalog without being overwhelmed with the need for tacky crap. The dollar store is also super-awesome, and there you can get glow-bracelets (6 for $1 at my local store– perfect for a slumber party!) and candy that you didn’t think they made anymore. This is crucial for reliving your childhood. Lemonheads, Lik-M-Aids, Boston Baked Beans, Cow Tales and Ring Pops all still live on at the dollar store.
Even better, OT has “make your own” with canvas covers – a great slumber party activity!
Some DIYers say that you can make one yourself, using an old tape measure, but it might be more hassle than it is worth to do that (cutting, sewing, etc.) and you need a thick tape measure to get the right tension/curl.
Whatever you do, make sure you get some that are fabric covered! A lot of the metal/plastic ones that are just painted (like the cheapo ones you might get in a gumball machine) have been found to have lead in them–not such a big deal for grownups, but it could be a problem if a little kid got a hold of one.
