NCDS Update: Flight 2 Closed

Submitted by on August 19, 2008 – 10:23 AM20 Comments

Prevailing flavors: cookies and cream; fudge ripple (barely, in a minor upset); sticky toffee pudding (upset); Heath Bar Crunch; Key Lime Pie (upset); both regular and mint chocolate chips; and rainbow sherbet.   This will lead to some brutal match-ups on that side of the draw come the Round Of 32.

Voting remains open for the third and fourth flights, so cast your ballot and tell a friend.

Go MCC!!! Ooh, Sticky Toffee Pudding pulled through, too. Yay!

I have been thinking about ice cream far too much this week.

  • Annie B says:

I don’t remember if I voted for Sticky Toffee Pudding, although I probably did because I hate walnuts, but I tasted it last week-end and WOW! I totally fell in love. And as we still had half a pint in the freezer waiting for us to be ready for it Sunday night after diner, we saw the Scoop show on Food Network where they covered the contest that made it it’s winner and we ran to the freezer and I fell in love once again. Best ice cream ever!

Thanks Sars, since the beginning of the NCDS, I’ve become addicted to ice cream. And now I want to know were I can taste Salty Caramal. Is that Baskin Robbins?

  • FloridaErin says:

    Good show, Key Lime Pie!

  • Meri says:

Yay! Key lime pie! Which I still need to find in ice cream form somehow…

  • Keckler says:

Yay, Sticky Toffee Pudding! Might have to get a pint to celebrate.

@ Annie B, try looking for Salted Caramel in Haagen-Dazs’ special reserve flavros.

  • Kari says:

Yeah, the only place I’ve had Salted Caramel ice cream is at a restaurant in NYC. I looked it up online and can only find recipes, not places to purchase. Any help here? It is so delicious. When I had it, it was served with bananas that had been sauteed with some cinnamon I think. MMMMMmmmm….. I’m totally salivating for that right now.

  • Hellcat13 says:

Ooh…I see a chocolate chip vs. mint chocolate chip grudge match happening in the near future! Key Lime Pie and sherbet are going to get killed, I think…setting us up for some chocolate chip fireworks!

Sars, I just want to thank you and Keckler for providing me with endless entertainment on boring work days…My friend/colleague and I are highlighting our picks and pinning them to our cubes. A different colleague caught me staring intensely at the chart today, calculating the outcomes in my head. She looked at me like I was an alien (from her perspective, I was staring at the wall) and kept on walking.

  • FloridaErin says:

@Meri- Our Targets here in Florida carry Blue Bell’s version of it. So. Good.

  • Lori says:

I am in the process of eating my first ever Sticky Toffee Pudding ice cream right now and it’s hard to type when you’re weeping with happiness.

Annie, try the Haagen-Dazs Fleur de Sel Caramel – fantastic!

  • Tricia says:

Annie, try the Haagen-Dazs Fleur de Sel Caramel – fantastic!

I found this at the local grocery last night — OMFG!!!!!!!!!!yesyesyes!!!!!!

  • Andrea says:

I just discovered the wonder that is the hagendazs.com site. If you click on the flavor you’re looking for and enter your zip code, the site will tell you what local stores have recently received a delivery of that flavor.

  • Jaybird says:

Our Bruster’s here in southwest GA (where customer service goes to die) has butter pecan, with locally-grown, roasted and salted pecans. I used to hate butter pecan anything, but this stuff…LOVE. Ditto for their key lime pie flavor, which tastes exactly like the real thing.

  • camelama says:

Oooo, thanks Angela for that HD website locater info! Finally I can get their vanilla chocolate chip, which NO ONE carries in my city. NO ONE. The only vanilla chocolate chip I can find around here is the cheapo fake ice cream!! It’s either min or nuthin’ in stores. Grrrrrrrrrr. But thanks to you, now I know where to go stock up! :)

  • Alexis says:

Andrea — you are my hero. A local gourmet supermarket evidently has the caramel. MUST TRY. Even if I have to walk two miles just to get it.

  • camelama says:

    er, sorry, *andrea*.

I am scarfing choc chip even as I type – yum.

  • Jennifer says:

Chocolate vs vanilla is going to be a nail-biter. It would be a shame to loose either of those stalwarts before the quarterfinals, but what can you do? I think vanilla will prevail though . . .

  • Rachel says:

What the hell, Wegmans? The HD reserve flavors get no love? I used the HD website feature (Andrea, you are a goddess-type-person, no lie), and the only place nearby where I can obtain the salted caramel flavor is in the crusty Stop & Shop I used to go to. Bleh! Foo!

  • avis says:

And now I know that NO shops in Baton Rouge carry any of the exciting HD flavors. To know that these flavors exist (caramelized pear with toasted pecan, cinnamon dulce de leche, sticky toffee pudding, pomegranate and dark chocolate) and they are unavailable – hell. Hell I say!

  • Erin says:

Agreed that Andrea is made of awesome. Some of the great-sounding HD flavors (caramelized pear with toasted pecan!?) do not exist in my city or surrounding areas. BUT! The fleur de sel DOES exist at several stores, including my regular stop…and I was already heading there later today.

    Mmmmm…salted caramel…

  • Annie B says:

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Thing is, we don’t have any HD stores in Montréal and the selection in grocery stores is not great. I think I got lucky finding Sticky Toffee Pudding (which I must have. Right now.).

We do have Laura Secord stores though and their “Croustillant à la française” (I would translate it as “French crisp”) is to die for (hard to describe but it’s tiny chocolate chips, “pralined” almonds and soft caramel bites). I had some during my lunch hour today.
