Initial Goal: Done.

Submitted by on October 12, 2008 – 1:26 PM14 Comments

As of this writing, $50,829.

In 11 days, 631 of you have raised more than fifty thousand dollars to help 7,660 students (at least; many of you have donated off-challenge as well).   Just let that sink in for a moment: FIFTY GRAND IN ELEVEN DAYS.

We have met our initial goal.   Congratulations, and thank you for all of your kindnesses: your ten-dollar bills, yes, but also your supportive emails, your prize donations, and your willingness to sacrifice.   It’s an amazing accomplishment.

Please take a moment today, if you have an American Express card, and vote for the Donors Choose entry in the AmEx Members Project — it’s free, and there’s a lot of money at stake that could help a lot of classrooms.

Stay tuned for a new mini-prize tomorrow.     Today, tell a friend about the AmEx Members Project, throw DC a vote if you’ve got an AmEx card…and pat yourselves on the back.   Ya done good.

I was astonished to see this project come up. I went to this school, 4th through 8th grade. As soon as I get paid it’s going straight to these kids’ bike helmets.

Wow. We are seriously, honestly, truly awesome.

I hope this inspires more readers to give whatever they can.

I just saw a commercial for Round Table Pizza with a guy in a tomato costume. I instantly thought of the TN challenge. You can see the commercial at their website. It’s the one at the bottom of the videos.

Sars is definitely cuter in her tomato costume, though.

    Yay us!

Awesome, we’ll so hit $100,000 by my birthday (the 29th). I’ll chip in more once the mini-prize is announced. ;)

That’s an average of $80 a person. And knowing that my 1 out of 631 was way lower than that means everyone else rocks pretty freakin’ hardcore. Well played.

I get paid 3 times in October. So I’ll have two more donor days. I hope by the third (30th) that I’ll just be gravy.

  • Missicat says:

WOW! Have to say that is astonishing, especially in light of the economy these days. Glad to see people are still giving where it is sooooo needed!

Sars, you are ever so fabulous, darlin’! Thank you for encouraging us!!!

Just received word, Donors Choose came in 2nd in the Am Ex challenge, which nets them $500K!

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

I am so excited that my proposal is being featured in the Tomato Nation challenge (I’m the science teacher trying to create an earthquake museum in her classroom)! That proposal has been on the site since August, without a dime contributed. Now it has $169 and growing! My boyfriend teases me because every spare second I have, I get on the computer, telling him, “I have to check my proposal!”

Donors, you have NO IDEA how appreciative and in awe I am that you are willing to give so selflesslessly. So many students are going to have a richer learning experience because there are good people like you in the world. I didn’t intend to get sentimental, but I can’t help it when I experience something like this first hand! Teaching can be such a challenging, isolating experience — knowing that this kind of support exists — it means the world. THANK YOU!!
