Evidently this movie was a big whoop twenty-odd years ago; it’s good, and everyone in it is very appealing — particularly Robert Duvall, who is much more sympathetic than he’s been in a while — but it’s short, and seems somewhat slight (or maybe “underplayed” is the right word), and while that’s not bad, it’s just not what I expected from something so well-regarded. A few sour notes, but overall, it’s a nice little picture, doesn’t try to be anything it’s not. (7/24/06)
