I’m hoping your readers can help me track down a quote that I swear I heard or read somewhere. I’ve been searching for it for awhile now, as I’d like to use it in my wedding. I could have sworn it was by someone like J.K. Rowling or another author, but my search attempts have turned up nil. Here’s the quote as I remember it:
“You shouldn’t get married until you can’t believe how lucky you are.”
Basically saying that when you meet someone and you feel incredibly lucky to have them in your life, that’s the person that you should commit to.
I have done so many searches for a combination of those words, but to no avail.

Seconding Hollie’s Iris Murdoch quote. It’s the only thing I’ve heard that seems close. If you do believe it’s something by JK Rowling try asking at your local library. Librarians often know about that stuff and if they don’t know the quote they’ll probably know how to search for it.
And if you do find out please let us know because my curiosity is definitely piqued!
If you can’t find the quote, you can use it in your wedding anyway. It’s a wonderful sentiment, and we can all quote YOU from now on.
Sort of close, and I won’t get it exactly right cos I’m not near my quote notebook, but – I read an article in (most likely) The Guardian, around 2005ish (?) about civil partnerships or similar, and straight couples’ reasons for marrying or not marrying, and one woman said that her mother had told her, “You should only marry someone if you can’t bear not to”. (well. not exactly, but that’s as close as I can remember.)

As I remember it being a writer who said it, it would make sense that they were referencing a quote about writing. That must be it.
