Baseball: Four Decades of Sports Illustrated’s Finest Writing on America’s Favorite Pastime
For a collection of this type, a lot of the writing is flat, and the essay on the ’91 Series is overwrought; it’s a strange selection, I think. Mickey Mantle, sure. ’86 postseason, sure. But the Clemente piece…not that Clemente wasn’t a great player, but a piece from ’66, years before his death? I don’t know. Decent plane reading, but disjointed, and not in my opinion their best representatives writing-wise. (12/12/03)
