The World’s Series of Base-Ball: Discuss
I went with an olde-timey title because Cliff Lee threw a good old-fashioned CG last night. Can’t say I love the result as a Yankee fan, but I have to give it up for the guy.

(Coming shortly: today’s contest harangue; the Vine; prizing updates; and answers to your emails, which I didn’t get to yesterday because of the reading. Anyone waiting on a response from me should give it ’til noon so I can dig out from under this pile o’ work.)

Gotta hand it to the Phils–they’re not ready to pack up just yet! And man, Shane Victorino just will not give up. He’s got to be in agony. I can’t believe he can still get a batting glove on.
The Phils play their best when they look like they’re having fun, and Jimmy’s smiling again.
I’m calling it! The Phillies will win the Series tomorrow night and Chase Utley will win MVP with a record 7 homers for the Series!! Bet RED! Go PHILLIES!!!
Credit where it’s due — the Phils just plain got outplayed by the Yankees. And it appears that Pedro’s Daddy is, in fact, Hideki Matsui, unlikely as that may be, both ethnically and chronologically.
Well done, Yanks. Same time next year?
Congrats to your Yankees, Sars! They held tough last night.
I was not convinced it was actually really going to happen until two outs in the ninth; I’d gotten a v.v. bad feeling about Mariano coming in for more than one inning, and not just because everyone’s exhausted by this point in a World Series. The Phillies are a damn good team and wouldn’t go down quietly, and I felt that if it went to a Game 7, they’d win, not the Yankees. Well played, Phils. And Manuel is a class act. Love that guy.
I’m glad Matsui got to have this, too. He’s a great player and he’s hung in there when his knees were the size of canteloupes. Now I hope he retires to the province they are sure to name after him.
I approve of Matsui’s getting the series MVP for many assorted reasons, but let’s not kid ourselves. Rivera is the MMMMVP, ever.
I’m also glad Girardi got some pie.
Best of all, I know what I’ll be chanting next opening day: Twen-tee Seh-ven! ::Clap clap, clap-clap-clap!:: Twen-tee Seh-ven! ::Clap clap, clap-clap-clap::
The Yankees supplied me with a crow-filled breakfast this morning. *SIGH* I’m proud of my Phillies and have to give Matsui props; he was the only one with prolonged hitting skill last night! It would’ve been nice for Utley to break that home run record. This team is young and feisty and they’ll be returning to the playoffs for several years!
Congratulations, Yankees. Go Phillies!!
And thank you, Sars! YOU are the class act!!
P.S. I felt bad for Texiera (?) when he got hit in the thigh. That was a dead-on (though I’m sure unintentional!) hit. I hope he heals quickly.
mctwin: didn’t Tex get hit in the thigh, like, sixteen times this Series?
Glad to see that Matsui was the hero of Game 6 (and, um, not A-Rod). I will say this: I’m not and will not be a Boston fan, so I don’t have a big hate-on for J. Damon, and I do think if he hadn’t advanced to third that one time (Game 3?), the Yanks don’t win.
Oh, and it looks like pitchers and catchers begin reporting Feb. 19.
Jessica: Yeah, probably, but this is the one I felt bad about. ;) j/t
I have to hand it to the Yankees–they outplayed Philly this year. But the Phils are young, and if Cholly and Ruben Amaro can get the pitching issues sorted, I think we’ll see more of this matchup in the years to come. Congrats, Sars–between Donors Choose and the Series, you’re having a pretty good run!
