Aww, indeed. Great pictures of a happy couple. Congrats to them!

  • Brigid says:

    Amen.

  • llyzabeth says:

    Yaaaaaaaay!!! Awwww…they look so HAPPY!

  • L.H. says:

Takei was in an internment camp in California during WW2, and he’s done so much work as a public servant for the state… California owes him. Yay!

  • JennB says:

I had no idea he was 71. Wow.

@L.H. – I never knew that! Apparently they plan to get married at L.A.’s Japanese American National Museum.

  • KPP says:

    Yay!

  • Rachel says:

I don’t have a link, but did anyone see the picture of those two ladies who had been together for 55 years at their wedding? It was so inspiring! And God knows 55 years is exponentially longer than most hetero marriages these days!

Right on, California. Here’s hoping New Jersey sacks up and follows suit.

  • La BellaDonna says:

Awwwww! *snff* Crying in the morning.

  • Jenny 2 says:

They are such a cute couple, congrats to them!

  • Kate says:

How can anyone look at that picture and not realize this is the right thing to do? They are clearly so happy and in love how could it be wrong to allow them to marry? Congrats to them.

  • JR says:

Is he really 71? Holy wow. I hope to look as young as him when I’m 51.

  • Molly says:

See, while I get that some people think homosexuality is against God etc etc and generally speaking as long as they leave me be I’m not out to change their minds, but…when I see something like this, or that couple who’s been together for 55 years…I just don’t UNDERSTAND how something like that could seem wrong to someone, you know? (And don’t get me started on how the sanctity of marriage is probably more tainted by certain celebrities staying married for a FEW WEEKS and then saying ah fuck it. Because you’ll never shut me up.)

And holy hell those pictures are UNBEARABLY cute. Awww.

  • Cindi in CO says:

    It’s about damn time.

Congratulations, and many more years of happiness for ALL of California’s gay couples.

Are you listening, State of Colorado?

  • LLyzabeth says:

And for more awwww moments, the newspaper here did an online “wedding album” of some of the couples who got married yesterday. Only one shot of some idiot protesting in the whole bunch. But it’s more than made up by the rest of the photos: couples in kilts, couples who brought their families and kids…just awesome.

  • Hannah says:

    Damn right, indeed. Hooray!

  • liz says:

What everybody said: word. I have never heard a cogent argument for denying this to people. Argh, I wish my state would man up (pun intended) & allow it. “Defense of marriage amendment”, my ass!

  • Keight says:

    So much awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!

Also, not being a big Trek person I never knew much about George. But I loved his cameo on “Psych”, and now he’s my favorite person in the whole world for the “I love sweaty basketball players” clip. HA!! It’s in the comments on the linked site, but you could probably just search it on YouTube. Greatest clip EVER.

  • Kama Cath says:

The pure joy, the elation on their faces is the best. I’ve been watching news from California and just grinning like an idiot. I think some friends of mine out there will get married now and I am thrilled that NY is going to honor these marriages.

  • Margaret in CO says:

    Exactly what Kate said.
    Awwwwwwwwww…

  • Linds says:

As a Christian all I have to say is if all of the anti-gay “christian” groups spent half as much time worrying about and working against poverty, no one would ever go hungry again. What a waste of time, fighting against love. Good for them and I hope many more states follow suit.

  • Jen S says:

That’s so romantic! Blessings on you and yours, George.

  • Sinead says:

LLyzabeth thanks for that link. Those photos were great. I especially liked the one of the couple who had been together 26 years (photo number 24). Yay for them. They looked so happy. I’m off to get some tissues now to dry my tears.

  • Katy says:

These pictures and the ones LLyzabeth posted are making me cry too! Everyone just looks so, so happy. It’s truly touching and lovely.

  • Meagen says:

Two states down, only 48 more to go!

  • Rachel says:

A friend of mine was at some of the weddings in SF on Monday and she was telling a story that she saw one couple bending down to talk to their kids with their marriage license in hand, saying “We have always been your mommies, but now the government says so, too.”

    *tear*

  • Driver B says:

WORD is seriously right. I am so happy to be living in the SF area right now and around all these happy people. :)

You know what really brought it home for me this week though? I recently learned that June 12 is the anniversary of Loving V. Virginia (1967), which struck down restrictions against interracial marriages. Just knowing that 40 years ago, I wouldn’t have been able to marry my husband because of someone else’s fantasy-based prejudice. . .it made me realize all the pain that gay couples must go through today.

Also in ref to all the pictures – the 55 years couple is Phyllis and Del, they are long-time activists and I absolutely agree. How can you know someone like that and not think they should be able to get married?

    We’re getting there!

  • KAB says:

That should have had an NSFW warning because of the TEARS! Like everyone else here, I fail to understand the arguement behind denying marriage to gay couples. Like we heteros have covered the institution in glory! Britney Spears and your first-husband-for-55-hours, I’m looking at you!

Congratulations to all of the newly married!

  • jive turkey says:

    Awesome. AWESOME!!!

  • Nominoo says:

Re: Llyzabeth: “Only one shot of some idiot protesting in the whole bunch.” Did you notice that the protester messed up the male and female symbols on his sign?

  • RJ says:

George Takei is just so darned lovable-looking (bad grammar, I know).

  • Keight says:

@Nominoo “Did you notice that the protester messed up the male and female symbols on his sign?”

Before you blow up the picture, it looks like he just has two female symbols on there. That makes me giggle hysterically for two reasons: 1) apparently, a man is just an upside down or backwards woman (HAAA!) and 2) he isn’t really protesting, he’s supporting lesbian marriages!
