Bowling for Columbine
I liked Roger & Me; I loved TV Nation. It’s not that I disagree with Moore’s beliefs, or think he “ought to” be more objective if he’s going to call it a documentary, blah blah. But something about this movie bugged me, and I can’t quite put my finger on what it is. There is a certain smugness to it that I think weakens the whole enterprise; this particular method of agitation is not, I suspect, as effective as Moore thinks it is. Again, I see his point — I just think his chosen way of making it is not the best. On the other hand, the movie got a lot of people talking and arguing, so there’s that…I don’t know. I can’t put my finger on exactly why I found it off-putting in the end — obviously the content itself is very troubling, and seeing the Columbine video was not what I would call a highlight of my media consumption last week, but, you know, that’s as it should be. I would have preferred that he let that content speak more for itself, I guess. (2/16/04)
