Flotsam and jetsam
1. Reader Tina emailed to remind me that, if you haven’t used your philanthropy credits from the TN fall contest, you should head over to DonorsChoose.org pronto — they expire June 11.
2. The summer-movie fest will continue over the weekend; upcoming thrills and chills include Hepburn, Biel, and Brody. Don’t forget to email suggestions for next year’s fest to bunting at tomatonation dot com, or post them in the comments.
3. Anyone looking for a potato recipe is advised to try this one, but to swap out the mint for chives and add half again as much of the red pepper flakes. It’s quite delicious.

I have a suggestion for next year’s Summer Movie Fest: “Shag” starring Bridget Fonda, Phoebe Cates and Annabeth Gish. Good times!!
Oh man! I just checked mine, and it expired in DECEMBER, a month after it was issued! I’m so sad.
No Funicello?
My boyfriend is the only person I have ever heard say, “half again as much.” He’s from Indiana, so I thought it was a Midwestern thing. You’re from Jersey! I’m so confused.
My mother’s a Hoosier, but I think I picked the expression up from Dorothy Sayers. It’s quite handy.
I’m from Virginia, and I say it as needed…can’t remember where or when I picked it up though. Lived in the UK for a few years, where it was pretty common.
So, “half again as much” would mean 1 1/2 times as much? If so, that is a handy little turn of phrase.
I believe we Brits generally favor “half as much again”. And that would be “favour”.
We say it in the (very) deep south, too. Not all over the place, but I’ve heard it frequently.
Those potatoes look awesome, BTW. Potatoes and corn on the cob are really the only vegetables I can get both of my sons to eat, so I’ll have to try this.
I hear “half as much again” in my family sometimes. Must be that Brit influence again. I agree on the utility of the expression, and with its application to the amount of red pepper flakes for this recipe. I think dill doesn’t always get along with other herbs in combinations like this, but chives, butter and new potatoes is a delectably foolproof combination. This link has more chive-y goodness, for those interested:
