Joy in Mudville: A Little League Memoir
Didn’t love it. Too many digressions, too much talking about Nyack, and in spots it felt forced, especially when the author was rising above some situation or another — some of the remembrances and dialogue were stagy and not believable. It just lacked brio, and the fact is, Little League parents are SO crazy and kids are SO wacky sometimes that a book on this subject could have been a corker. This one’s just kind of standard. Mitchell’s an okay writer but I got the feeling he wasn’t at the top of his game here. (6/12/06)
