It is, do not kid yourself, right up on that line where “quirky” becomes “shticky,” but the acting saves it.Every member of the cast is utterly lovable and familiar, and there isn’t a false acting note anywhere.Steve Carell in particular…he’s just doing the work, very careful, and he has a few moments where he made me tear up.This is what made 40-Year Old Virgin (or whatever their dicked-up punctuation is) so good, to me, was that he could give that character an interior life and moments of self-awareness and sadness.He’s just really good.Anyway: if you like Wes Anderson flicks, you’ll like this.If you don’t, you probably won’t.(8/7/06)
