Lost in La Mancha
It takes a while to get going, and then all of a sudden, it’s sort of…over. I watched a similar documentary about how Heaven’s Gate went off the rails, and when I compare the two, I think part of the reason LiLM is less satisfying is because you actually want Terry Gilliam to succeed; it doesn’t seem like hubris that’s bringing the movie down, or stupidity, or inexperience, but bad luck and artistic ambition that didn’t mesh at all. It’s a slight documentary and one that felt both too long and too short. (7/5/04)
