NC Double Shot Qualifying Round 1: A-F

Submitted by on April 26, 2011 – 10:47 AM39 Comments

We’ve got too many shots and not enough slots; it’s up to you, dear tippler, to narrow the field.

Things to know: this poll is for drinks beginning with letters A-F, so please don’t freak out all “WHERE’S PIMM’S CUP?!” because it’s in an upcoming poll; you can vote for as many as 10; you can also suggest drinks we may have missed in the comments (again, only drinks that start with A-F); if you haven’t heard of a given drink, either skip it or pour yourself a Google on the rocks.

Ready? Let’s do it.

NC Double Shot Qualifier A-F: vote for AS MANY AS TEN (10)

  • Erin says:

I’d like to see the Bloody Mary’s far superior sibling, the Caesar, on this list.

  • Leigh in CO says:

Not big on candy, don’t eat much ice cream. THIS is my bracket!

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

Assume that the Bloody Mary entry contains Caesars, Bloody Marias, and any other Worstie/celery relative.

  • Liz says:

Nice to see a Dark & Stormy, I love ginger in all forms and this is perfection in a glass, imho.

  • Haras says:

Need to see Amaretto Sour up there!

  • mctwin says:

If the Buttery Nipple (Bailey’s and Butterscotch Schnapps) is not listed under another name, it should be included here. Its quite yummy!

  • Anlyn says:

I don’t know squat about mixed drinks, and I’m going to Vegas in June, so this is great timing. I have no idea what to vote for, because I don’t know what’s in any of these. Now I know what to research, at least, so I don’t look like a complete idiot.

  • Maria says:

Oh, this is bringing me back to my days behind the bar. And learning recipes for drinks nobody would ever order. I haven’t drank in years, but I’ll definitely be voting!

Thank you for not including the Bahama Breeze, aka Sugar Shock on the Rocks.

  • TexasAnnie says:

I also would have voted for Amaretto Sour and Buttery Nipple.

  • ferretrick says:

Amaretto Sour? Also seems like there should be a whole list that start with the word “flaming.”

But, Bloody Mary for the win!!!

  • Bex says:

I’d agree on the amaretto sour and the buttery nipple.

  • Brandi says:

Yeah, the Buttery Nipple (hehe) is one that needs to be added. They have a funny name, but they are sooooo gooooood!

I also have to say i’ve not heard of many of these drinks. To the bar!

  • K. says:

“Oh, this is bringing me back to my days behind the bar. And learning recipes for drinks nobody would ever order.”
@Maria: word. I tended bar in college and we had to learn all these drinks that no one anywhere ever orders. Not to mention that I have seen bartenders say flat-out “I’m not making that, order something else.” (I saw someone order a round of mojitos, which are indeed delicious but take a long time to make, when the bar was four people deep at last call. I shook my head as soon as the order came out of her mouth.)

The Trinidadian blood in my veins means I likes me my rum, but I prefer it with ginger ale, not coke. And yes, I do like a Dark and Stormy.

  • Jenn says:

I don’t know anything about mixed drinks either, so I’m just voting for the ones with the best names.

  • Claire says:

Oh shit, I’ve only been legally able to drink for a year and I rarely go to bars so I have no idea what half of these are. They don’t serve drinks with more than two ingredients at college parties!

  • Beadgirl says:

Aw, Cuba Libre! My father always drank Bacardi (Don Q if they had it), diet coke, and lime. I don’t like colas, but now I want a rum and coke, sniff.

There are a lot of drinks on here I have not heard of; I suspect some experimentation is in order.

  • hank says:

This is beer-adjacent, but would a Boilermaker count? If so, consider this a write-in.

  • rab01 says:

These may be too simple for the snackets but I have to speak up for two drinks in this alphabet range that I’ve actually had and enjoyed: (1) a bourbon and coke (or diet coke); and (2) a boilermaker/depth charge (whiskey vs. tequila but, to me, the defining trait is dropping a distilled spirit into beer).

  • Jem says:

Another write in vote for Amaretto sour here! Also, now I want one.

  • Jen S 1.0 says:

Champagne cocktail! This is about the only drink I can stand–as I’ve said earlier, I just don’t like the taste of most forms of alcohol. But this one not only tastes decent but makes me feel all elegant, like a celebrity is about to fall in love with me and my superior taste in cocktails.

  • Judy says:

Casting another vote for Amaretto Sour, but also, is it bad that I voted I voted for Eggnog just so that I can hope it goes down in flaming fiasco in the first round?

  • Erin in SLC says:

No Fuzzy Navel? (Oh, because we’re supposed to be grownups? OK.)

  • Jeanne says:

I didn’t know rum & Coke had a proper name, you learn something new every day. My preferred mixture is Diet Coke with coconut rum and a twist of lime.

And I’d been making vodka/cranberry juice mixtures for years before I knew it was called a Cape Codder. There’s also a name for the orange juice/cranberry juice/rum mixture I made in grad school all the time but the name escapes me.

  • MattPatt says:

@Judy, if voting to send Eggnog on so we can have the pleasure of ripping it apart later is wrong, I don’t want to be right.

  • anotherkate says:

FUZZY NAVEL! My misspent youth demands it.

  • attica says:

I’ve been drinking Bacardi Cocktails (white rum, lime juice, grenadine, shake, serve neat or rocks, maraschino cherry garnish) since I was 13 years old. (My mom let me have a sip of hers when we were out to eat. And the legal drinking age was lower then.) It’s hard to find a ‘tender now who knows the drink, but it’s simple enough to relate, so I still drink ’em. Tasty and festive!

I vote to add it to the list, please!

  • TC says:

Mmmm, caipirinhas! We drank gallons of them at a hotel bar in Guatemala. The hotel was far from town, but the bar was cheap and the ‘tender was a heavy pour. That was a good Christmas…

  • attica says:

I believe the addition of lime is what distinguishes a proper Cuba Libre from your average Rum and Coke. I think. This distinction may have faded over time.

  • mo pie says:

    Apple Martini and Amaretto Sour!

  • tadpoledrain says:

It’s not popular, but I think you should add the aperol spritz so more people will try it — deeeeeelicious!

  • Caitlin says:

I must add to the chorus of voices calling for Amaretto Sours, Apple martinis/appletinis (or whatever various places call them…) and Fuzzy Navels to be added to the list.

  • SarahBeth says:

    Mmmmmmm. Rum and Coke.

I’m a captain girl myself, but I also love a good Cosmo. I haven’t had one in FOREVER.

  • Jenn says:

I agree that Amaretto Sour should be there.

  • Jessamyn says:

Another vote for the Aperol Spritz, plus two more classics: the Brooklyn and the Corpse Reviver #2.

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

We’re probably rolling out all Sours as one entry — whisky, Amaretto, rum, et al. — but thanks for the suggestions!

    @Jessamyn, what’s in a Brooklyn?

  • Jessamyn says:

The Brooklyn is similar to a Manhattan, but with rye, vermouth, maraschino liqueur, and Amer Picon (if you can get it, which most people can’t – otherwise an amaro like Averna, Ramazotti or Nonino). It’s one of our favorites. The recipe we make at home is here.

  • Lee says:

I know it stands no chance of getting in the bracket, but I had to vote for the Alabama Slammer…One of the few decent things to bear my home state’s name!

  • Tarn says:

Wondering where coffee drinks will go? Under C for coffee? Or alphabetized under Irish/Spanish etc. On a cold rainy night a nice warm alcoholic coffee is THE best thing in the world.

I voted for Bloody Mary. So I can have the pleasure of voting AGAINST Bloody Mary. Foul ungodly concoction.

  • Erin says:

I see your response about the “sours”, Sars (hee. “Sours Sars”), but wanted to add my voice to the chorus of support for the amaretto sour. I’m down with having a “sours” but want to make sure that at least that lumped-together category makes the finals. Sours & champagne cocktails are my absolute faves.
