NC Double Shot Qualifying Round 3: O-Z

Submitted by on April 28, 2011 – 12:43 PM20 Comments

We’ve got too many shots and not enough slots; it’s up to you, dear tippler, to narrow the field.

Things to know: this poll is for drinks beginning with letters O-Z, so please don’t freak out all “WHERE’S BRANDY ALEXANDER” because it’s in a previous poll; you can vote for as many as 10; you can also suggest drinks we may have missed in the comments (again, only drinks that start with O-Z); if you haven’t heard of a givendrink, either skip it or pour yourself a Google on the rocks.

Any inconsistencies you notice, please mention those in the comments too.

Ready? Let’s do it.

NC Double Shot Qualifier O-Z: vote for AS MANY AS TEN (10)

Smith and Kerns: Kahlua, cream and soda. I like to customize by having some cacao added.

  • Judy says:

Shirley Temple is a cocktail now? I’ve been getting gypped for years in the alcohol department!

  • Dolph says:

I have the same Old Mr. Boston De Luxe Official Bartender’s Guide as pictured! Good classic recipes.

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

We had to have the one non-alcoholic entry in there, mostly for the nostalgia factor. I used to loooove them when I was little. But if it gets killed off, so be it.

  • Jennifer M. says:

Sars, how are these votes going to be tallied. Will all three polls be combined and the bracket set based on total votes relative to all cocktails or just the ones in the same poll?

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

Here’s our extremely scientific method: we’re going to consider the additional suggestions; we’re going to look at the polls to see which drinks people don’t seem to care about; we’re going to jiggle it until we have 64. It’s not really “relative to” anything except that it seems like nobody’s going to vote for a Bobby Burns, e.g.

  • Erin in SLC says:

Failed to vote for it, but I think you’re right about the Shirley Temple. They were delicious, and I felt at once “so grown up” AND like an adorable child star when I ordered them. (Dad played a lot of bar gigs.)

  • Erin says:

Is the triple entry for Slippery Nipple/Sex on the Beach/Fuzzy Navel supposed to indicate that those are all names for the same thing? Because I thought (and in more idiotic times, have ordered) a Slippery Nipple was a shot: Sambuca and Bailey’s. Whereas the other two are fruity, big-glass-full-of-ice cocktails (I think with peach schnapps?). So… not the same thing. Right? Just me? Could I use more question marks?

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

They’re not the same thing; they’re just lumped together because of a certain “ha ha ha…not”-ness to all of their names. We may separate them; we may not. But this kind of question is why we’re doing a qualifying round — to get a sense of everyone’s ideas of various cocktails, whether we should bother, etc. For example, my feeling is that Screwdrivers and Sea Breezes and Madrases and Greyhounds are all so similar that I don’t know if we want to take up four slots on them, so we’re kind of trying to figure that out.

…Now I can’t remember if we even put Madras on the list. So as you can see it’s not exactly the height of formality around here.

  • Laura says:

Yesss! Singapore Sling = my all-time favorite drink. It’s a pain in the ass to make so I only order it at schmancy bars every once in a while.

  • LizzieKath says:

Oh man, PIMM’S CUP. You guys, PIMMS CUP. This drink is sunshine in a glass. It is the Best Thing.

  • Sarah says:

Pisco Sour! The only drink in the whole bracket that matters! Ah, memories of South America…give it a try if you haven’t already, people.

  • Amelia says:

Holy jeez, am I sad to see how low Ramos Gin Fizz is in the rankings. This drink is like that almost unbelievable cool breeze scented with orange blossoms on a hot sticky deep-south afternoon. SO GOOD.

  • Carolyn says:

True story: at a family wedding many years ago, my cousin asked my uncle to order a Roy Rogers (coke and grenadine) at the bar. My uncle, slightly tipsy, accidentally orders a Rob Roy and doesn’t realize the mistake until my cousin ended up slightly tipsy. My cousin was five at the time.

    “Dad, this tastes funny!”

  • Claire says:

Seconding LizzieKath on the Pimm’s Cup. Not only is it happiness and rainbows in a glass, every time I make one for my friends they are impressed by my secretly non-existent bartending skills since it seems much more complicated than it actually is.

  • Keckler says:

At the Waikiki Room in Minneapolis (sigh, poo poo platters, how I miss thee), my sister and I always got Shirley Temples, but they were called “Kiddie Cocktails.” So, yep, they’re cocktails.

    Re: Madras

Yeah, I think we were going to combine them with another one but then…didn’t? We need to stop being drunk when we Skype.

Also: Pimm’s Cup was the official sponsor of all my Time of Your Life recaps. Memories.

  • Kristen says:

I’m just going to chime in for all of the pregnant ladies out there, and say ~NC Double Shot is dramatically unfair. You are systematically reminding me of all of the lovely, tasty, delicious drinks *I cannot have.* ~

Yes, please. I will have one of each.

  • Michael E says:

Oh what the heck, I’ll have a white wine spritzer! (spritzer spritzer spritzer…)

  • Peter L says:

Pimm’s Cup is nowhere near high enough on that list. Other summer beverages can only look at Pimm’s Cup and weep in shame. That is all.

  • Jamie says:

@Kristen, yes! I’m due in December and I now have a list of delicious-sounding, never-tried cocktails to enjoy on New Year’s Eve! (Of course, after a year of not drinking, I’ll probably make it through two before I fall asleep!)
