Product Crush: Sephora Brand Nail Polish

Submitted by on May 5, 2008 – 10:19 PM9 Comments

I like a product that is cleverly teeny, and this here bitty bottle of polish is so cleverly teeny that I actually crooned “awwww” at it in the Sephora checkout line (ask Wing, who edged away from me afterwards, and rightly so) before grabbing two bottles.

I didn’t really expect much, either, because it seems like, whenever a cosmetics company tries to reinvent the nail-polish-delivery-system wheel, it’s a disappointment — like the pens. Brilliant idea, right? Portable, less messy…and insanely clog-prone. The little bottle isn’t exactly a quantum leap — it’s still a bottle, after all, with a brush — but it’s awesome for travel, it won’t dry out before you can use the whole bottle (or get sick of it), and it holds up really well to typing, Diet-Coke-opening, you name it. It looks like they’ve retired one of the colors I got and loved, Cassis, but you can maybe still find it if you go to a physical store.

DUDE. I KNOW. I frickin love those tiny bottles. I have a dark red and my friend has the blue, and they both stayed on my nails for until I took them off. Very nice, very convenient, and who ever uses a full bottle of nail polish anyway? Plus, they’re like $4.

Oh, I love this stuff, too — and I have that exact color. It does hold up really well. I have had a manicure last long enough that it will grow out faster than it will chip off, which is kind of excellent, in my opinion.

One thing, though: unless you use it every week (which is never going to happen for me, because I have several colors and like to switch it up), it probably will get a bit goopy and thick before you can use the whole bottle. I know, you’d think that wouldn’t happen with the small size, but it does. Something in the formula must make it more goop prone than, say, NYC. I still love the stuff, though.

    @Ruby: In-store? $2!

@vague: Thanks for the tip; I’m the same way about rotating the polish.

  • Rachel says:

I think some of them are $2 and some are $4, depending on the shade.

It doesn’t chip off even afte daily showering? I find that is my problem with nail polish. OPI flakes off after a single shower. The Revlon Color Stay stuff lasts about 3-4 showers before wearing away at the tips…

We have a new Sephora in our Macy’s at the mall.. and I *might* risk mall-going (it’s a beast to get in and out of over there) if this stuff TRULY stays on through normal showering!

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

I…have to wonder what exactly you’re doing in the shower. How thickly do you apply the polish? More than a few coats (counting the top coat) and it’s going to peel off more easily.

Using one thin coat, one thick coat, one top coat, and one coat of quick-dry, this stuff lasted five days. On the down side, when it started to go, it went all at once.

  • RK says:

whenever a cosmetics company tries to reinvent the nail-polish-delivery-system wheel, it’s a disappointment — like the pens.

Note to self: the word is PENS, not PENIS. That’s the kind of reading mistake that conjurs up all kinds of disturbing images…

    As you were.

  • Peach says:

See, now I wonder what I’m doing in the shower too… With OPI, because it’s so thick, I only do two layers (trying to make them as thin as possible) and a single quick-dry top coat.

With the Revlon stuff, two coats and a top coat.

Maybe it’s something in my shampoo??

  • Krissa says:

If you rough up your nails just a leeeeeetle bit (like with the first side of those four-sided nail file doohickies) the polish will stick better. Kind of like sanding a door before painting it. Also, make sure your nails are very very clean and free of lotion, as this will cause a nice moisture barrier between the nail and the polish.
