Good stuff. It’s tough to watch in spots, but in a good way, and Maggie Gyllenhaal is really good — plus it’s one of the few movies that gets Jersey right. The accents are right, they clearly shot it on location, and nothing is more irritating to me than when they try to oversell the Jerseyness and wind up in Bay Ridge as a result. Overall, it felt a little bit unfinished, like it needed a few more minutes; the turning point was just a liiiiiittle forced, to me, like the script could have just taken a minute, thought over what it wanted to do, and done it a little more evenly. It’s hard to put my finger on it. Still, good little flick. (12/19/06)
