Skirt + you = flat stomach

The triumphant return of the pumpkin spice latte means it’s time to start shopping for 1) fall clothes that 2) hide a gut. And by “a” I mean “my.” And I could not be more thrilled to tell you that this little herringbone jobbie is just the thing:

“But Sarah — clever but annoying ticket pockets are for models and the lactose-intolerant!” Not so, my friend. I don’t know if it’s that the pleat draws the eye down or what, but I’m telling you, I looked like Olive Oyl in it.

“But Sarah — it’s kind of spendy, no?” Kind of, but it goes with everything (there’s also a grey version). Furthermore: side pockets. Deep ones.

Sizing notes: the 10 fit “true” in the waist for me, but as I’m one of those “12 in the waist, 8 in the backyard, split the difference” 10s, your mileage may vary; petites may find the length problematic (it hit me mid-knee).

I love and covet that skirt, but what’s up with J. Crew not carrying 16s anymore, or only up to 12s in a lot of their new stuff? Bastards.

  • Margaret in CO says:

You should go buy both colors. That sounds like a perfect skirt!
    (Every skirt needs pockets, IMHO.)

Did Popeye’s eyes pop when he saw you in it?

  • daisy says:

I feel you, Ashley; I’d need it in a 20. But really I’m writing to say how much I crave the model’s shoes.

  • Jen says:

Nice skirt, but man, those shoes… Impractical, but seriously adorable.

  • Carrie says:

I’m not normally one to fall in love with footwear. But those shoes she’s wearing with that skirt? COVET.

Also, may I say that I love the new bloggy, spontaneous, fun feel of your website.

  • rb says:

So do you think it would fit the other proportion? You know, 12 in the waist and 14 in the caboose?

  • Sars says:

rb: Not sure, but I would guess not so much. Crew stuff tends to run boy-straight through the hips, which is good for me (I hate those fins of fabric on the sides of the average pair of jeans) but not as good for curvier ladies.

With that said, it’s a slight A-line, so you might be fine.

  • rb says:

Thanks, Sars. I’ll recommend it to my bff, the hip-less wonder. It’s a super cute style.

  • Annie F says:

They also sell something similar to this at Old Navy. It doesn’t seem to be on the site, but I just bought it there last week. They may have the larger sizes that would work.

  • Laura V says:

@rb – I am also a 12 in the waist, 14 in the caboose, and I found a bunch of cute skirts at Banana Republic earlier this week. Sz 12s in some, but mostly Sz 14s, worn a bit low on the hip, worked best for me. If pencil-skirt cuts look good on you, I’d try there.

  • B says:

My husband looked over, saw the flat stomach thing and asked if he could have one of those skirts. I think you may have started a really bizarre trend….!

  • zh says:

A-line + wide waistband = ftw. Nice find!

  • Sureshot says:

Dang – you had me until the dreaded side pocket. I have wide hips and ahem, generous, thighs, so those damn things always poof out on me such that it looks like my hips have uncontrollable freshman-boy-at-cheerleading-tryouts boners. Which, not exactly safe for work, ya know?

  • Abra Cat says:

This skirt is awfully tempting, but if it’s a choice between buying this and surprising my daughter with Hannah Montana concert tickets, I guess I’ll have to go with the tickets. Maybe it’ll go on sale eventually, and they’ll still have my size. I’ll be sure and hold my breath waiting for that…

  • Yubi Shines says:

Baah! Makes me wish I wore skirts.

Or had the cash to spare.

    Bah.
