The Man with the Golden Arm
For its time, it’s very good — a bit melodramatic in parts, but it keeps the Reefer Madness propaganda-type lines to a minimum. The best part, really, is the Zosch subplot; Eleanor Parker is excellent, and so is Kim Novak, for that matter. I’ve never really gotten the Novak hoopla and I think she’s actually a little bit annoying and stilted in Vertigo, but she’s lovely in this one, and underplays nicely. The movie is more a curiosity than a must, but Sinatra is genuinely good in it instead of his customary “better than a piece of furniture” good. (6/30/04)
