Still some busywork to do here before I open the polls (read: “I picked a fight with the polling software and lost, big-time”), but the N Cereal AA is almost ready to launch.  You can find the complete bracket by clicking this link.  The write-ups for the Round of 64, Flight 1: The Classics will go up Tuesday, with polls to follow no later than Wednesday.

We welcome your comments and suggestions, and notification of any errors or typos.  Tell a friend, share it on Facebook, and let’s get ready to rumble.  (But not in the comments, please.  Heh.)

I am way to excited about this! It’s 4:30 am and I almost did a happy dance!

  • Hellcat13 says:

I punched my husband so hard in the arm when I read Wing’s tweet yesterday, I think I left a bruise. (*WHAM* N-CEREAL-DOUBLE-A, HONEY!!!) Suffice to say I was a tad bit excited. Work is boring, and life on the Internet has been quiet…glad to have something to look forward to!

  • attica says:

Clearly, the top left bracket will be the bloodiest. The also-rans in the lower left will benefit by such scheduling.

Heee. This is just too much fun.

  • Ausim says:

Not to be picky but Captain Crunch = Cap’n Crunch. It’s a pet peeve of my hubbie’s…and now I guess mine too.

  • Leigh in CO says:

I’m already stressing about Cracklin’ Oat Bran versus Grape Nuts. Gah!

  • Emerson says:

    Get Urkelized with Urkel-O’s!

  • avis says:

Yay! This is actually more exciting than the ice creams and I have several new flavors thanks to that one.

Oh I wish CW Post were still around. I loved that cereal so much…

  • Annie says:

I also am way too excited about this. I’m a bit curious whether the final two will be Cheerios vs Honey Nut Cheerios, the way it is in my pantry.

  • Hannah says:

Wow, the Cracklin’ Oat Bran/Grape Nuts face-off is going to be a doozie for me. (And WOW did my parents raise me on some old-fart cereals.)

  • LTG says:

In the grocery business, the usual name for the category of super-healthy unsweetened cereal is “twigs & gravel.” When Peapod (online grocery) first went up, they actually used that name in their product hierarchy for a while before breaking it down into more marketable categories like “multigrain” and “organic and natural.”

  • Sue says:

@Avis – Oh, I loved CW Post too. My local chain (Kroger) has store-brand “100% Natural Oats” cereal that is really, really close to CW Post. Maybe your store does too? It’s just in the regular cereal aisle, not the organic / healthy section.

@LTG – Hilarious, because I always call those healthy-type cereals “crunchy rocks and twigs” cereal. Same thing with coarse-textured, whole grain breads. I always have to explain to people that I’m not *actually* eating bread or cereal comprised of rocks and twigs, but mean it figuratively. Now, I can explain that I am using a standard industry term. Validation!

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

NOTE: I built the brackets incorrectly vis-a-vis the rankings. Please stand by for a corrected version. This will not affect voting in this round.

  • avis says:

@Sue – Thanks! I’ll have to try those! I’m not sure if we still have Kroger’s though so I’ll be looking around.

  • Sherry Lynn says:

Cracklin’ Oat Bran all the way. That stuff is like crack – I can only buy it once in a blue moon for fear that I will eat the entire box in a day. Characterizing it as “twigs and gravel” is crazy talk = it has high fat and cinnamon goodness to die for and no way all that fat in one serving can be good for you. Grape Nuts must be defeated!

  • LLyzabeth says:

It may be better to wait until its up for voting, but I have to ask: does anybody else remember Cracklin’ Oat Bran being…different? Better? I know it’s kinda tasty now, but as kids my sister and I would DESTROY a box of that stuff in no time. And then they changed the recipe, I KNOW they did. We knew it the second we tried it. *sniff* and it’s never been the same…

Seriously, are we crazy? Well, okay, are we crazy about THIS?

  • LTG says:

I can’t help but wonder what the tournament would have been like had it been done in the days when Freakies were still around. BossMoss for the win!

  • Sam says:

This is brilliant, but can I just say how unhappy I am that Cheerios and Golden Grahams are facing off in the first round? That would pretty much be my championship match-up…

  • Sandman says:

Not only do I remember Cracklin’ Oat Bran being different, I remember it used to have a different name: it seems to me that it was Cracklin’ Bran – no Oat. And the addition of Oat did not make it tastier. But I can’t find it (any version, oated or unoated) in my grocery store(s) any more, and it’s so long since I tasted either version, I’m no longer certain.

I do think we’ll be seeing a lot more a lot more nostalgia in the comments of the “Oh, why can’t I find Crack Berry Crunchies anymore? I LOVED those!” variety than we did for the ice cream brackets. Either the twigs and rocks/sugar-coated floor sweepings biz is subject to a lot more product obsolescence than the frozen butterfat biz or people just get really attached to the crap they scarfed down while watching Saturday morning cartoons. I can’t decide which.
