The NCheeseAA Tournament: Manchego Madness (…maybe)

“Mere moments later, a plate-clearing brawl broke out, and ladies and gentlemen, Stilton is a hair-puller.”

“What the hell are you on about?” So glad you asked! Keckler, star of The Grub Report and TWoP, and I have collaborated on our own version of the NCAA tournament — but with cheeses! And you get to vote! It’s The NCheeseAA (at least until we get a cease-and-desist, so come up with alternate names now just in case), and the fun starts Monday April 7 in the AM.

You can read our mini-FAQ and intro (it’s also on the top righthand side of the TN main page); you can check out the bracket; and starting tomorrow, you can read our coverage of the match-ups, and then start voting — just watch this page and TGR for the polls to go live.

Polls open for the Whole Foods draw tomorrow, April 7. Tell a friend; hell, tell a cheese-loving enemy. And enjoy!

    Behold, the power of cheese.

  • sweetfreedom says:

No fetta? No fetta?! I’m sorry, I have to go lie down. And then eat some fetta. Mmmm, fetta

  • Liz says:

Man, Morbier got screwed. It’s in the same bracket as Brie, Gorgonzola and Parmigiano-Reggiano. It doesn’t have a chance. I call foul on the bracketing committee.

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

It probably would have been screwed anywhere we put it, honestly. Some of these cheeses are just cannon fodder (the Deli draw in particular is going to be an abattoir) but we didn’t want to put our thumbs on the scale too blatantly to try to save them.

  • TomG says:

I got Taleggio all the way to the Fromage Four in a very weak Deli region. Hooray cinderella cheese!

Seriously, mozz a #1? Even if it’s di bufala…waaaayy overrated.

  • Gillian says:

What I want to know is: Where’s the Babybel? I love me a cheese puck. Also, why wasn’t there a cheese ball at the T-ware party? NEXT TIME.

  • Daki says:

okay, love! And I can’t wait to unload my Kraft-hating vitriol all over the grocery bracket. Not to mention the anguish and thrills of watching how far my beloved Havarti can go… will this be the year? At long last? (bites nails nervously….)

  • Sara says:

This? Is made of AWESOME. Especially since I’m sick and kidless today. I am kind of embarrassed to admit that in the very first round there were cheeses I hadn’t heard of, though. And I call myself a connoisseur.

  • Melissa says:

Does Whole Foods have mancheggo?? I’ve been looking for it since I came home from Spain six weeks ago. Mmmm, the taste of parmesan, but soft and spreadably delish….

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

  • Keckler says:

If you want, you can look up some cheeses at the Library o’ Cheese here:

    http://www.cowgirlcreamery.com/library.asp

(Full disclosure: I wrote all 300+ cheeses there.)

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

@Gillian: Don’t worry, Baby/Bon Bel is in another draw.

If you’re worried that one of your faves didn’t make it, feel free to check out the bracket; it’s in the tournament homepage link, TN homepage, top right. You can sneak-preview all the Round Of 64 match-ups before we roll them out in the next few days.

  • sweetfreedom says:

Mozzerella di bufala is the cheese of kings!

  • Madge says:

How wrong is it that I read your parenthesis as “cheese-and-desist”? So wrong.
