The Secret of Kells
Whimsical but not twee, grand but not grandiose, The Secret of Kells put me in mind of certain Samurai Jack episodes, specifically the one with the Viking-esque hall-of-warriors sequence. The animation is nothing technologically ground-breaking, but it fits with the medieval-period action of the movie — the way the subjects of medieval paintings so often look tired, burdened, observing a village tourney or holding the infant Jesus up for inspection for centuries in a row.
I wouldn’t call it a detail-oriented script; a number of things don’t make sense or feel underwritten. The movie isn’t really trying to tell its story that way, though. It’s supposed to feel mythical, and it does.

Ooh, Sars, can I ask where you got your hands on this one? My own Oscarthon tally stands at Harley 15, Oscars 28 (I don’t count the shorts) and I would love to be able to see this so I could complete the best animated category (and because I adore illuminated manuscripts and studied medieval art in school) but it doesn’t seem to be available anywhere at all that I can find.
BTW, a tip for next year — AMC Best Picture Showcase FTW! It’s an awesome time. The BF and I are doing it again this year (well, the second Saturday, at least, since there’s no way I’m seeing Avatar twice).
You can ask.
Oh ho! Well played, Oscar lady of mystery, well played.
