We Have Always Lived in the Castle
The problem here is that it’s pretty clear early in the book what had actually happened (sorry for the vagueness, I don’t want to ruin it for anyone), which is a shame; Jackson’s first-person narration is perfectly done, but it’s done so well that it telegraphs what really happened and then I kind of glossed over it because I was in a hurry to get to that part. It’s very good, but I think it only needed to be a short story. And Merricat’s whole “one day we’ll live on the moon” thing starts to wear thin…maybe I just don’t get it because I don’t have a sister, but there’s something creepy about their closeness, like, beyond what Jackson might have intended.
