“WHAP! [innocent ‘sleeping’]”

Submitted by on October 29, 2007 – 9:10 AM36 Comments

I think the animated clip to which that headline refers has gotten forwarded all over the internet in the last week, so some of you may already know what I’m about to link to, but just in case: “Wake-Up Cat.”

Not only is it hilarious, the cat in it sounds enough like a real cat that my own cats woke up and came over to my desk to see what was going on.

I’ve watched that like 50 times since it was posted on Cuteoverload. LOVESOMUCH!

And my cats totally didn’t understand where the sound was coming from either.

  • Marnie says:

When I saw this last week, I almost died laughing. I’m a very light sleeper, so my cat has no problems waking me up, but my fiance could sleep through the ceiling falling in (and actually has, but that’s a different story), and I just know that his cat would do what the cat in this clip does if he could!

  • Veronica B. says:

I’m just left wondering at what point exactly did the cartoonist manage to sneak a camera into my bedroom.

Anyone want a cat? Or two?

  • FloridaErin says:

Also saw it on Cute Overload, also had the cats wander over to see what was going on. They flipped out when I played the video of the little orange kitten looking for his mom.

Love that cartoon, though. The best detail is the multitude of toys spread out around the bed. I tend to wake up with cat toys next to my bed and wonder if they spent the night bringing them to me in the hopes that we can have playtime. :-)

  • eg says:

    Hilarious!

In reality though, all my cats ever had to do was start hacking up a hairball and I would shoot up like an arrow. That’s how I broke my toe….

    Oh, good times!

  • Karen says:

It’s that stre-e-etch at the end of the “innocent ‘sleeping'” that get me. It’s so dead on.

My boy Charlie might have sat for that animator, actually. But he himself is utterly impervious to recorded animal noises, on TV, radio, or computer. I played this for him and didn’t even get an ear swivel until I chimed in with my own noise (we have a call-and-response relationship).

  • Risha says:

It drove both my dog and my three cats crazy looking for the invisible extra cat in the laptop. Especially since I kept replaying it over and over while laughing like a hyena.

  • Anne says:

I got that from a friend a couple weeks ago and couldn’t stop laughing. When the cat lays on his back and just reaches out with one paw for that “tap, tap, tap-tap” on his face I almost fell off my chair, that was so on. The only thing missing is my Ricky’s favorite wake-mom-up trick: digging frantically at my back. Man, that tickles.

  • RJ says:

OH GOD that was hilarious!!!! I’m going to watch it at home to see how my pets react … I can actually see one of my cats doing exactly that!

  • Mint Mogul says:

Speaking of cute cats — have you been following this cat trapping at JFK story on Gothamist (with cute cate photos of course)? It’s just awful that the Port Authority is going to trap the cats, and probably euthanize them. Maybe a little awesome from the Challenge could go that way?

  • I think my cat was hiding when I played it (forwarded to me by my brother on behalf of my mom, who is internet-edly challenged) because she knew I’d recognize her in the clip. Granted, I’ve never woken up with a baseball bat-sized shiner, but I often find an all-too-innocent kitty at my feet when I wake up unexpectedly.

Of course, I also have a teething 10-month-old who is _NOT_ a good sleeper. That might have something to do with the night wakings too.

My current cat is far better than her mother though. Momma cat used to sleep on my face whenever she could, and when she was feeling especially friendly, she’d nibble on any exposed portion of my face she could find – always about fifteen minutes prior to my alarm going off. I will never miss covering my head with a blanket to avoid having my ears and nose nibbled on by a cat.

  • DensityDuck says:

Yep; when I saw that video, I thought “been there, done that.” Except that my boys are more likely to lick my face than paw it…

  • bronte says:

I was holding in the silent, rocking giggles and I… have no sound card on my work comp. Can’t wait to have a look with sound when I get home.

  • Lea says:

Is that what normal cats sound like? Because my cats didn’t respond to it at all – but then again they are half Siamese, but with the full Siamese propensity for strange, bizarre sounding meows. Seriously. My girl cat sounds like an arthritic goat, and her brother does those really raspy ‘ra-ah-ah-ow’ types of meows. They’re demented.

This video is why we put them in the laundry room at night. Previously we’d just shut the bedroom door, but they’d try to turn the knob, and then they’d meow into the crack under the door. It wasn’t irritating, so much as HILARIOUS, so we’d often get up because we were laughing at them.

  • ferretrick says:

I was going to send this to you when I saw it, but then I figured 50 other people probably would too. Glad you enjoyed it. Its the paw pointing to the mouth and the “mrow” at the end that really kills me.

  • Maren says:

Oh my god, it’s every morning of my life. Minus the part where she knocks over every single thing on my nightstand and dresser and bats my glasses behind the bed.

  • nem0 says:

Haha, that is so my aunt’s cat, Ming. Except his finale involved licking my nose and upper lip until I woke up, which sounds cute until you realize he’s been outside eating stinky cat food and stinky unidentifiable crap (possibly actual crap), and hoo-eeeee, does his breath smell nasty.

  • mapia says:

I LOVE the trilling sounds every time the kitty thinks his person is waking up! And the soft paw on the face – my one cat always manages to catch a nostril which wakes me up straight away!

  • Kristin says:

I’ve already seen it but I had to watch it again. My Wooshin is just like this! Minus the baseball bat.

  • BaschaW says:

Ok. Once again this website has caused me to giggle uncontrollably whilst frantically playing w/ the volume so my coworkers don’t think I’m insane. (too late?)
My one cat, Ming (yes, The Merciless) is happy to just sit on my pillow and slowly take it over, while Flash (yes, Gordon) actually lays his head on the pillow next to me, and seems to be most comfortable w/ his paw on my lips (which drives me NUTS!!!) Now Prince Aran (used to be Princess Arra, but there was an epiphany at the vets) is happy to just walk up and down my back while kneading, so… yeah. This cartoon strikes a BIT too close to home while making me laugh. Uncontrollably.

  • Jaybird says:

Best visual throwaway: the general tatty clawed-up-ness of the room. That cat runs the place.

  • Elizabeth says:

Hee, best cat animation EVER. (And in case anybody’s wondering who made it, it’s by Simon Tofield of Tandem Films. My new hero obviously.)

  • Jen S says:

I laughed like a hyena on Ecstasy and had to show it to my husband. He was just smiling until–PAW ON FACE! Than he busted a gut too. My cat Danny does everything but the baseball bat, but his specialties are “Paw On Face” (I loved how you could hear the tiny *smack* sound) and “Slurpy Purr”, which is him purring through his “almost time for breakfast!” drool while he sticks his nose right in your ear.

  • cayenne says:

I’ve been giggling over this for a week – it’s just brilliant. This is absolutely my cat, colour changed to protect the guilty. She’s a frequent offender, most recently 4:30am this morning, which earned her a boot into the hallway, and a shut bedroom door. Today’s episode also involved finding my glasses on the floor 5 feet from where I’d left them; as they were still folded, it means that she walked on my bedside table and whapped them across the room. Bad cat.

I got the WAV of this at work last week, and when forwarding to friends did consider sending it to you too, but also thought of the inbox overload potential. I’m glad it’s up on YouTube; that’s much more convenient.

  • Karen says:

Oh my lord, @Maren, you and I are obviously sharing the same cat. Not to mention 80% of our names.

  • Marisa says:

All three of our cats are now trying to figure out where That Cat they just heard went.

  • DensityDuck says:

For some reason, my vet cannot pronounce “Orion” (the name of my younger cat.) I usually get “oree-ahn”, although once I got “onion”…

  • Kim says:

Oh my GOD. I have not laughed so hard since the first Roomba essay. That video is going straight into my “really crappy day rescue” file…

  • missbanshee says:

I’ve been howling laughing at this for at least 24 hours, especially the face-tapping. My boy-cat is content to barf with rage when I don’t get up at 4:45 to feed him, but the girl-cat will smack me in the face until I get up to feed their hateful food-holes. Oh, and if the smacking doesn’t work, she BITES OUT MY EARRINGS. Why didn’t I get goldfish instead?

  • jive turkey says:

Hoo boy – that totally made my day. A day made very sleepy by my cat, who did the “meow…meow…meow” routine this morning at 4am.

  • Llama says:

It’s so much like my fat maine coon it’s crazy! We’ve been giggling over this for a week, and watch it at least once every night. My SO’s favorite part is the mouth-pointing meow at the end, while I love the excited kneading every time he thinks the owner is waking up. The face patting is what reminds me of my Giblet. He does it every morning, but only to me.

  • Rbelle says:

I thought this hit rather close to home, too – my cat does the paw to the face often, and kneads my chest (even when I, ahem, don’t have it covered – ouch!) – but my fiance thought it was incomplete. Where’s the part where the cat totally puts his ass right in the sleeper’s face?

  • cayenne says:

Rbelle, no kidding. And the part where, in pursuit of the Warm Spot, the cat shoves its human budge-by-budge across & sometimes off the bed? Oh, that’s fun, too.

  • Molly says:

Worryingly, Abby decided to perch by my shouder and watch the whole thing. I do hope she isn’t getting ideas.

Of course, she’s already mastered the face-smack. Or she sits on the back of the couch and pummels me in the head until I pay attention to her.

Stupid cat. It’s a good thing she’s so cute.

  • Jobetta says:

Oh my god, this is awesome. It’s totally my cat. I laughed the most at the paw-on-face bit, because that’s exactly what my cat does. She also likes to lie on top of me with her face so close that her nose touches my cheek. Then she kneads. Thank god she can’t use a bat.

  • Sars says:

It’s pretty funny to see people watching it for the first time, because inevitably, they’re just smiling politely and thinking you’re a dink for making them watch A Silly Cat Forward ™, but THEN it gets to the “Pat. Patpatpat” and they start laughing in spite of themselves.
