Charitable giving for the holidays
Robert T. emailed me earlier today with a link to Changing The Present, a site that serves as a sort of clearinghouse for worthy causes — you can browse all sorts of non-profits that support every cause under the sun, from HIV/AIDS research and treatment to animal welfare to veteran support to education and the arts. And the site also tells you exactly what your donation is doing and what you get for your money (for example, $90 buys six months of care for an orphaned baby chimp — awwww!).
If you’d like to give a gift in someone’s name this year, instead of/in addition to physical loot, Donors Choose is of course a fantastic cause, but you might find something more personalized to your friends and family members at Changing The Present. Give it a look.

Sars, fyi for $10.00 you can sponser a chicken for a month… perhaps a farting chicken even.
Well, if we’re talking chickens (flatuent or otherwise), I’ve always been a fan of Heifer International. They send animals to developing countries, for food. I usually give around Easter, in various people’s names. “Dear Mom: This year, I gave a flock of chickens in your name,” etc.

I was a big fan of Heifer International (got an enormous kick out of giving my brother the hind end of a donkey for Christmas one year) but was terribly dismayed to find out that one donation lands you on their marketing list F-O-R-E-V-E-R, no matter how many times you respectfully request they take you off their mailing list in order to save their dollars and the world’s trees. I finally gave up and still – five years later – receive about 40 tons of paper a year from them. It’s very disheartening. Send your feel-good donations to DonorsChoose, is my advice.
