Contest: 9 Days ‘Til Awesome
October is nigh! Awesome is imminent! Eeee!
I’d still love more projects (email the URL or URLs to bunting at tomatonation dot com; please, no misspelled titles, or projects set to expire in the next few weeks) and prizes (look for a master list in the next couple of days — but we can still add things).
I’d also love for y’all to check with your workplaces re: matching gift programs; to go through the couch for spare change, or to check last winter’s coat pockets for a sawbuck you forgot about; and to get ready to roll.
Two words: bet red.

“October is nigh! Awesome is imminent! Eeee!” Possibly the funniest thing I’ve read all day. Best of luck with this year’s contest – I’m sure the Tomato Nationists? Nationalists? Nationites? (yeah, none of those sound right but you get my drift) will come through as always.
I was wondering if it is ok to nominate projects that have already been partially funded and/or are eligible for matching grants from foundations. Or are you only looking for projects with no current donors?
Are you still taking suggestions for TN t-shirts? Because “Bet Red.”? Also awesome. Can’t wait to see what the Nationals ( … yeah?) come through with this year.
@Mike: Yes, that’s fine — matching grants are even better (less work for us, heh). I’d prefer projects with more than $200 left to go, though, just so they don’t get funded and I have to rejigger the list.
ZOMG, Tomato Costume Goes To Vegas? With an Elvis wig? Perhaps busting out the BeDazzler ahead of time to get some rhinestones on? Oh please oh please tell me this is a possibility.
I have big plans afoot to clean out sofa cushions, winter coats and cars to gather up all the change in the house and get it counted. The glow of AWESOME! than emanates from the TN readership keeps my seasonal depression at bay for the entire month of October. :-)
I’m about to lose my job and so money is tight, but I am sure I can still find money to help out the kids who need it so badly- go Tomato Nation and Donors choose!
Getting super excited! One thing I love about this challenge over the years is how it has changed my charitable giving. I used to think “who cares about a few dollars?” but boy do I think differently now. I am always awed by the power of the Tomato Nation and I’m so glad to count myself as a member!!
Now I’m off to see if I can design a fingerless glove pattern with tomato leaves in it…..
@tulip: That sounds amaaaaazing.
@everyone else: After an impromptu pedicure and some classic Sheddicus Fartnado behavior (Vet Tech: “Did he poo in his carrier?” Sarah: “No — you can tell because that would smell LESS.”), we are home. And we are both sulking about the feline EKG, but only one of us is going to have to get a paper route to pay for it, HOBEY.
Sending juju for the Hobey & hoping the EKG is a pretty one, nothing wrong!!! (((((Sars)))))
I would like to see more geographical diversity. Being from southern CA, I would like to support schools in my area. I am looking forward to supporting this contest for the second time!
@Jennifer: I feel like I’ve added several dozen projects from that region; I’m definitely trying to make sure that all regions are represented. Please feel free to email me any projects from that area that I may have overlooked! (Jersey is actually kind of underrepresented at the moment. Anyone wanting to comb through the projects and try to yank Camden out of its own ass will have my gratitude.)
Sarah, I’ll definitely send you some Jersey projects, including Camden, when I get a free 30 minutes!
