Contest: A Reminder
The most important thing is that these classrooms get the supplies they need, obviously.
But the SECOND most important thing is that you donate through the TN page. When you get set to donate, check the URL; if you don’t see my challenge ID number (23248), your donation won’t count towards the Tomato Nation grand total.
You can still send me your receipt and I will still count it; just something to keep an eye on.

Hi Sars.
First, thanks for making my kids famous on the internet (2:08 in the video of AWESOME).
Second, I would like to give several DC gift certificates to friends, but want them to be counted under the TN umbrella. I checked the site, but am unsure how I can make this be so. Any guidance?
Thanks!
Em
Hi, Em! You’re welcome; thanks for sending the pic.
I think the only way for GCs to be counted towards TN’s total is if they spend the GCs in the giving page; you’d have to pair them with the contest giving page URL, and specific orders not to give the money to Fred Wilson or something. (Hi, Fred! Hope you’re well. We have to kick your ass, though; sorry. Take care!)
The other choice is to make donations with your friends as honorees; then you can pick the projects, but the classroom materials and thank-yous are sent to your friends.
That’s a good idea to add to our wish list for future contests, though, so if you have five minutes, shoot an email to DC HQ asking if they can put that on the punch list. That’s smc at donorschoose dot org.
I forgot to check my company’s matching policy before I donated, and missed the minimum by five dollars! Just a reminder to everyone to check the policy *before* you donate!
Is there any way to search for schools in specific states or cities via the TN Donor’s Choose page (other than reading through all the projects)? When I clicked on “search” it took me back to the main homepage. Would like to donate within my state if possible.
Thanks for organizing this – donating this way has become one of favorite parts of fall.
@Chris: Again, there is currently no search or sort capability within the TN giving page itself. You will have to scroll down through the remaining projects to find ones local to you (I made an effort to include at least a few projects from every state).
I really apologize that it’s hard to find specific/tailored projects within the giving page; it’s a hassle for me, too. But there is no search/sort capability within the giving page at this time, and likely will not be until a future contest. Thanks for your patience!
Question – I noticed a couple or donations where the comment was attributed to the Tomato Nation fund drive but wasn’t through our link. If we send those to DC can they fix it? It might seem small, but 20 bucks here and there add up to a tomato in Atlantic City, so I think it’s worth it.
@Trash: I’ll ask. It’s possible that they can reassign those donations if we send them receipts and can prove the donor “meant to” do it through TN’s page, but if it’s a case-by-case, manual job, they may just not have time.
I asked The Tactician, but this is usually about the time in the process where The Infrastructure wants to beat my ass with a beehive for whining about the feature set (nor do I blame him: hi, Oliver!), so we’ll see where we are with it.
UPDATE: It is possible to reassign entries in TN’s back end. If you figure out/are worried that your donation DID NOT count towards the Tomato Nation giving page, please send your receipt to me with the word “reassignment” in the subject line. I will add this to the contest FAQ also.
