Contest: Mac Attack
$104,291. What a week — and it’s not even over yet.
And we’ve got what looks like a sizable match on the horizon, too. Don’t forget: based on what we’ve raised by Sunday 25 October, and the percentage of overall Social Media Challenge earnings that figure represents, HP will reward us accordingly. The more money we raise, the better our percentage.
Let’s hit $110,000 by Sunday. And let’s start with a mini-prize!
The Mac Life team is working on “One Laptop at a Time, Part I,” but they need our help. Thanks to reader Susie O., two winners could each get a yearlong subscription to Mac Life magazine and a Mac Life t-shirt — and another winner could receive a $50 Apple gift card.
Thanks, folks. You’ve done so well so far, and the finish is in sight. Keep at it.

I live in New York City, and had the privilege to volunteer for DonorsChoose.org last night. If any one lives in the NY metro area, I would absolutely recommend giving them some of your time. They had me looking over the Thank You letters from the students to the donors to make sure there was no personal information or anything inappropriate. For those of you who will be getting these letters, you are in for the most heart-warming and sincere notes of gratitude. The materials these students are really making a difference: they are enhancing the experiences of the students, and in some cases, providing the basic resources they would not have otherwise. I was tearing up at ever other letter and ready to hand over all the money I had.
Some things I was able to ask the staffer there:
1) For the HP matching, they do not know if they are going by strict percentage donated-the staffer said they were still working the matching out, Sarah might know more.
2) For the $50 gift card for automated donations, they are likely putting the information in manually so when they are received will vary (the staffer I talked to worked in the feedback part of the process and didn’t know much about the technology side)
Something else, if a teacher volunteers a 4-hour shift, they will receive a $100 gift card that they can put to their own projects. The staffer I talked to was a sweetheart! She had the kind of spirit you would hope to be involved in molding the next generation. She had nothing but praise for our lovely Ms. Bunting; everyone knew of the work Sarah has given to DonorsChoose.org over the years.
I showed the staffer the TN website and our sprint to Asirda’s 8K match. She was speechless and said it was awe-inspiring and spent time looking at the entries and comments. Having done a lot of fund-raising, she was really touched by how a thread of relatively disconnected people could come together for a greater good. Rock on Tomato Nation.
I’ve decided that starting every day in October with tears streaming down my face is an excellent internal cleansing regimen.
@Vanessa- How did you go about volunteering for DC? I live in New York area and would have plenty of time to spare for such an amazing cause. Is there someone I should call?
@Karen, you can find out about volunteer opportunities by emailing volunteers at donorschoose dot org.
@ Sarah- Thanks! I will do that now.
I wonder if anyone at HP is monitering this and realizing how much of their grant is(likely) going to one blog. “Wait, this one blog has donated how much?”
$106k already! Sars – get ready with another target because I’m hopeful that we’ll hit $110k well before Sunday.
