Red Ops Day 8: Joplin, MO

All righty, Nation. Donations have been a liiiiiiittle casual so far today; we haven’t broken a thousand bucks and we still have 7 full projects to complete if we want to get that 1K match from M. Giant and Trash. Some of y’all have to get paid tomorrow, no? You know some of these Joplin kids have been taking classes, like, in hammocks and the hatchbacks of Pintos, right?

I appreciate every thing and dollar you’ve made happen so far; I do. Times are hard. But we can’t just leave four figures on the table. Even a few dollars will help — and if you donate to Pete The Cat’s project, I in turn will donate $25 to the animal-protection organization of your choice. Forward those receipts!

Excellent progress so far today, team! But we can do more for Joplin — and if we finish 10 of Joplin’s projects, M. Giant and Trash will contribute a $1000 match! Thanks, friends.

And all donors today could win a $50 Amazon gift card compliments of Joan S. Thanks, Joan — and thanks to all of you! Please forward your receipts to me (bunting at tomatonation dot com); mention Red Ops on Facebook and Twitter; and tell friends, foes, and fam about the fundraiser.

You’re awesome!

Hello! Joplin, MO. A mission, should you choose to accept it (and you customarily do): complete 10 Joplin projects, get a 1K match! Sounds like a lot of work, but not really, because State Farm is matching, AND we’ve got a lot of projects that don’t cost much — like rhythm instruments and art canvases.

Let’s get started! Prizing to come.

12:05 AM
Today’s strike target: Joplin, MO. May 22 marked the one-year anniversary (if we want to use that word) of the tornado striking the town, killing 161, and flattening the place physically and emotionally.

But from what I hear, Joplinians (“Jopludlians”?) don’t give up or mess around. Well, that’s a fine coincidence: neither does the Red Ops team. Let’s hit that fine city with a tomato instead, shall we?

We do not have a match code today. You’ll just have to push a boulder uphill like you’ve done so many times before. But! 1) I’ll help you out with some loot later today. 2) Like a good neighbor, State Farm is matching a bunch of projects on our Joplin list. 3) Missouri is the “Show Me” state. It showed me a few things back in 2010; now it’s time for us to show them that the internet ain’t forgot them.

Start with some pom-poms, maybe? Then forward me your receipts to bunting at tomatonation dot com.

Thanks, in advance, for supporting Joplin. I attended Joplin schools from kindergarten through high school graduation, and now I am a proud Joplin Schools teacher. The last year has been rough, but we made it through. I see some teachers from my building on the list!

  • Wehaf says:

I’m excited about some of these Joplin projects, but need to check with my boyfriend before committing to one. I do have two questions, though:

    1) Is there any easy way to see all the uncompleted projects from the previous days?
    2) Where can we find our total tally for money raised? The counter on the DC site resets with every new city, so I don’t know, quantitatively, exactly how awesome the TN has been thus far.

  • charmaine says:

Hi. Will you add the giving page link, pretty please…

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

@charmie: Done! Sorry. Keep in mind it’s always the same: http://www.donorschoose.org/red-ops

@Wehaf, overall leaderboard is at http://www.donorschoose.org/donors/leadershipboard.html?category=332 — although I’m thinking that tally is low, but I’ll check.

  • Sally says:

As per your question: We call ourselves Joplinites!

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

@Sally — thanks for the tip!

  • Ang. says:

Another Joplinite here. (Well, former–I moved to KC just before the tornado.) I just came to say thanks for all your help, everyone! That city and its people need whatever you can give.

…and on a personal note, this weekend, my parents are moving into their new house, which replaces the one that was destroyed in the tornado. Yay for moving out of the hotel suite!

  • Rebecca U says:

I emptied my “mad money” piggy bank and had a little to donate, and then during the donation process realized I had account credits to donate – how awesome is that? Check your accounts everyone!

  • Sarah says:

I kicked in my lunch money for Pete the Cat. Bringing lunch is better for me, and better for the kids. Go forth and donate!

  • Molly says:

Okay, I couldn’t bear to leave the $1000 match on the table, so I dipped back into the piggy bank and finished off the puppet project — that should be Completed Project #10!

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

    ‘Twas! Excellent work, guys.

  • Dana Shadwick says:

I am a very thankful Joplin teacher. My project “Rocking and Writing with Pete the Cat” was totally funded in one day by you! I cannot express my gratitude and I know my little children will love learning with Pete! You guys rock!
