The Tomato Nation Fall Classic: Middle of the Fifth
Halfway through the month today, and guess what you’ve done so far? You’ve polished off the 10K for Donors Choose with your usual ease; and you’ve only got $8,416 to go for Pitch In For Baseball and the Jackie Robinson Foundation.
Excellent work. What’s next?
Well, you can add your name to the list of baseball-related pledges we’ve got going — or make them football-related, that’s fine too. We’ve got dollars for Cain Ks, dollars for annoying announcers, dollars for QB biffs…we’ve got mean-spirited fun that helps kids and college students! (That should be TN’s new tagline. “Mean: For Kids!”) Hell, do something for college soccer if you’d like.
We’ve also got prizes. ALL forwarded receipts from today and tomorrow can win a Pitch In For Baseball ball cap (great for hiding bed-head; also makes a neat gift) OR a copy of Civilization Revolution or Civilization IV Complete, generously donated by reader Lisa and our helpful friends at Firaxis Games.
Donate or pledge today — otherwise Matt Cain has to throw like 5,000 strikes. Let’s get ‘er done.

I am not a baseball fan, but I’m addicted to college football. So:
I pledge $5 for every touchdown my Gators score tonight. And in case they play as crap as they did the past 2 games, I also pledge $5 for every snap that Mike Pouncey, “one of the best center prospects heading into the 2011 NFL Draft,” flubs, and $5 for every Gator turnover.
Finally, another $10 for every Gator who takes a turn at QB tonight. (Last game it was 3.)
Just rec’d a check from the fam as an early wedding present. I told them that we wanted donations to charity in lieu of gifts, so it seems only right to pass on some of the $$$ to the TN challenge.
After the weekend, I’ve got myself in for $60: Lincecum threw 8 Ks (@ $5 ea.), Werth had two hits (way to not be a hero last night, Red) (@ $5 ea.), and the Yankees lost one (@ $10 ea.). Everyone, feel free to check my stats and/or my math.
Heh. Jay Cutler was sacked six times yesterday, bringing my grand total so far to $80. Still one game left – does the O line hate Cutler enough to push my total to $150?
Hi there – I had originally said I’d throw in another $5 to Sars $10 for bees each day we beat the end-of-the month deadline. I’m going to up that to $10 for me, making it a true match.
Let’s go bees!
Whoohoo, the Saints offense came through this week! I happily paid for every point they scored, and I added extra to make up for the missed field goal (get it together Garrett Hartley!). That was fun.
On behalf of Pitch In For Baseball, thanks to everyone! Anyone have any pledges on Cole Hamels K’s this afternoon? Go Phillies!
Werth continues to be – okay, I won’t say it – but the Yankees are coming through big time. That’s another $20 for PIFB. (Sorry, Sars.)
@Tal: I’m not! Mets fan for kids!
Sars, can we get a fundraising update? I’ve got two Giants wins to donate for still, I’m waiting to see how today shakes out and then will send at least $10 (maybe $15 or $20)…
I must have fallen asleep before JWerth got his hit last night. Current total: $85.
After Thursday’s game, featuring seven Lincecum Ks and one very welcome Werth hit, my giving total is up to $125.
